I have a very narrow foot and have always worn Nike because I could order them in narrow online. Then my son who is an avid Brooks customer recommended I see if any of your running shoes came in AA. I have several pieces of Brooks running clothing and love them so I was familiar with Brooks quality. I was able to order a pair of Brooks Defyance and so far I love them. I am still breaking them in but have done some treadmill running and one longer run on pavement and so far I am very happy with the feel and fit. Goodbye Nike, hello Brooks!

I tried the Defyance 5 because it advertized that it's like the Adrenaline GTS, but without the added stability & is .4oz lighter. Since I've sworn by the Adrenaline for the past 5 models & am now ready to ditch the stablity & in need of something lighter, I thought this would be my next shoe. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The heel is too heavy, which changed the way my foot planted & caused calve cramps (I run 20miles/wk & never have this problem). The inside toe box has a tag-like material, which made crninkling sounds.

I also had the version 4 prior to this new 5 and I agree with the other review regarding the width. I am a 9 Narrow and the version 4 was more snug fitting over the entire foot, especially noted in the toe box compared with the slightly wider toe box in the version 5. I have not found this to cause any additional problems with comfort or function. I have put them through a few races and have performed well. I also run 20-30 miles a week depending on work schedule.

Wow! This is my first pair of brooks and let me say I am impressed! I was a loyal Saucony Ride fan until the most recent version which is now too wide for my foot. At my local running store they recommended the defiance 5 and I was immediatly impressed with the light weight and fit. Just got back from my first run and the cushioning / responsivness is spot on.

This shoe is more like the Defyance 3, which really had a good fit, smooth transition, was durable and was light enough for all training. Very happy that the 5 is back to being like the 3. The 4 seemed like a misstep.

I rotate between Defyance 4 and 5 every other day. I do like version 4 more than this version. This shoe seems stiffer than version 4. Although the tongue is still pretty thick, it's a step up from Defyance 4. I do enjoy running in these shoes, and the colors rock! It's hard to find shoes that aren't neon or tie-dye these days (esp for military members who require a conservatively colored shoe). It seems like these shoes will last for quite a few miles.

These are wonderful shoes! They are very light weight, so it feels like they are actually part of my feet, if that makes any sense! In other words, I don't feel like I'm wearing a big cloddy shoe. Very supportive and comfortable. I have owned saucony, , and asics, but these are the shoes I will buy again. So glad I discovered them! I am using them for aerobics, Zumba, walking, and a little running.

Defyance 4 was my first narrow shoe, and love how it hugged my arch and kept my heel firmly in place.
Defyance 5 does not fit the same. After 3 runs (4.5,6,10) my heels constantly slip and I can slip my foot out of the shoe without untying. Tying the shoe 'tighter' on my arch does not help and becomes uncomfortable.
Wish I could have tried the updated version in stores before purchasing, but it is hard to find NARROW shoes. May order another pair of Defyance 4, as they are still available online.

I bought these shoes training for a half marathon and since they are my favorite sneaker. Usually every shoe eventually hurts my feet but these are great. Lightweight and the material allows your feet to breath. I guess they wouldn't be good if they got wet since the marterial is thin but that's the only down side.

This is a tough review to write. I love this shoe but the material in the toe box makes a lot of noise. Sadly, this time of year requires some time on treadys at the gym so I'll have to return these or risk being a one woman band. The noise is similar to that of a babys toys that makes crinkly sounds.
That said, I will give these a whirl again when the next generation comes out.
