It's no secret. When it comes to sustainability, it's time for running gear to lead the way, not follow. With our usual passion, Brooks has embraced this challenge. The result is the Green Silence, a groundbreaking advance in running shoes that will not be kept quiet.

By utilizing recycled and other earth-friendly components, this striking—and strikingly fast—performance racing shoe breathes new life into the competition category—as well as countless post-race plastic water and sports beverage bottles, rubber that would otherwise be abandoned, and discarded Skid Row, Kix, and Ratt CDs. No wonder the Green Silence has so much personality.

Key Green Features:

  • BioMoGo, the world's first-ever biodegradable midsole for running shoes
  • 75% of the shoe's materials are post-consumer recycled
  • Biodegradable insole and collar foams
  • Packaging is 100% post-consumer recycled

  • Laces, gillies, and reinforced webbing are 100% post-consumer recycled
  • Water-based adhesives are used throughout
  • All dyes and colorants are non-toxic

Constructed with roughly half as many parts as comparable shoes, the Green Silence requires less petroleum and energy to make. Of course, the shoe manages all of this while delivering the premium performance expected from Brooks.

Reduce your carbon footprint. Move forward. Run Happy®.

Eco-built for Speed

The Green Silence is more than just a red and yellow shoe wrapped in green. In our quest to make our products more people- and earth-friendly, we never sacrifice premium performance. The Green Silence is first and foremost a blazin' fast performance racing flat. We just happened to concoct a way to make it as gracious on the environment as it will be for you in long-distance competition.

All Green Silence materials meet Brooks' rigid quality control standards for high-mileage training shoes. But of course these are just our words. Here's what some competitive runners said about their Green Silence wear-testing experiences:

"After 100 miles, still holding up nicely. The heel is a nice compromise between stiff and soft. I hate shoes that are too squishy but also dislike shoes that jar with each heel strike. Even with what feels like a thinner sole, I felt like my foot was well protected."

"The small amount and strategic location of the seams is awesome. I don't feel any chaffing or blisters from these, and that is key since many flats leave you with blisters."

"Very comfortable fit. The asymmetrical lacing helps provide a very snug and secure 'wrapped' midfoot."

"The shoe didn't help or hinder with transition—it allowed your foot to do its thing."

"Very natural/smooth transition from heel-strike to propulsion. . .the underfoot feel of the shoe feels balanced and very consistent throughout the entire gait cycle. The midsole feels flexible and responsive—I feel it encourages a more efficient foot-strike and toe off."

"Unlike racing flats I've previously worn, the Green Silence manages to hold its own (and me!) for distances of a half marathon and beyond."

Key Performance Features:

Midsole: Yep, the Green Silence gets our biodegradable, high-resiliency BioMoGo midsole foam you'll find in other Brooks shoes. But instead of making the midsole paper thin like you'll find in most racing flats, the Green Silence gives you a thicker midsole that offers a wider base net for more inherent support. That means it'll handle your stride as well at mile 2 as mile 26.2.

Outsole: Look no further than the bottom of the Green Silence for Brooks' eco-friendlier high-abrasion rubber (HPR Green) in high wear spots. And like the midsole, the Green Silence gives you full thickness of this outsole material for long-run durability. But don't worry; we minimize its placement to keep weight down.

Upper: Fit is it. And if a racing flat doesn't fit like a glove, we've lost the race before the gun fires. The Green Silence—with its conformable upper materials and asymmetrical vamp and lacing system—hugs your foot like a sock. The wrap-over tongue won't slide around. Fewer seams means less potential for rubbing, and multiple eyelet options for top tongue lacing customize fit and ensure a snug midfoot wrap.

Green Silence Glossary

BioEVA

Brooks took the same additive used to make Brooks' BioMoGo midsoles biodegradable and added it to regular Ethylene Vinyl Acetate™ (EVA) to make BioEVA, a fully biodegradable sockliner foam; biodegradable materials break down completely to nutrients without leaving behind small pieces of plastic or other contaminants.

Gillies

Loops on the upper that laces are routed through as an alternative to eyelets; these can be made from webbing or other durable materials.

Non-toxic dyes and pigments

Colorants that include no heavy metals (lead, mercury, etc.) or other toxic chemicals such as phthalates, azo-dyes and disperse dyes.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)

Plastic used to make clear, disposable water bottles; PET can be recycled after use and converted back into the polyester textiles used in shoe upper meshes.

Post-consumer recycled (PCR) material

Any material made from other products after those original products have served their useful, intended life; examples would include turning newspapers into shoe boxes or disposable water bottles into shoe upper meshes.

Solvent-reduced overlay

Minimal use of VOCs during the manufacturing process when adding upper overlays.

Soy-based ink

Colorants made using non-food soybean oils rather than petroleum oils; the amounts of pigment and VOCs used in soy-based inks are also reduced due to the quality of soy oil.

VOC

Volatile organic compounds (or chemicals) that have high enough vapor pressures under normal conditions to vaporize and enter the atmosphere; VOCs can have short- and long-term adverse health effects on humans and the environment.

Water-based adhesives (WBA)

Adhesives and primers—used to glue together shoe parts—that are made liquid using water as the solvent rather than toxic volatile organic chemicals (VOCs).
