Running is challenging enough. Add in some wet weather and your discomfort and risk of injury may go way up. Running in wet weather can cause friction between your skin and the socks and shoes you’re wearing. And that’s where blisters typically come in. But there’s more — running in a wet shoe can cause foot instability, leading to joint pain and other injuries.

What is GORE-TEX material?

If you have some familiarity with outdoor gear, you’ve likely heard of GORE-TEX products. This brand, started by Bill and Genevieve Gore in 1959, is known for its waterproof, windproof, and breathable material. You can find GORE-TEX product technology built into jackets, pants, gloves, and yes, running shoes.

Bill started his company with his belief in the potential of a synthetic polymer called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Ten years after the company’s founding, their son Bob created what would become the GORE-TEX membrane by rapidly stretching PTFE. The result was a strong, microporous material. Each square inch of the GORE-TEX membrane has nine billion pores. Each of these tiny holes is 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet. And that is how your gear with GORE-TEX product technology keep you dry.

From our waterproof shoes to your dry feet

Weather be damned, because we have two updated options for shoes with GORE-TEX product technology: the Ghost 14 and the Cascadia 16.

The Ghost 14 GTX features a lightweight GORE-TEX Invisible Fit membrane that’s bonded directly to the upper for a lighter, more flexible fit. This shoe also has a smoother feel because we extended our soft DNA LOFT midsole cushioning throughout the entire midsole, instead of just on the lateral side to provide a soft and smooth feel from under the whole foot. In addition, runners enjoy smooth transitions because the new, softer midsole combined with the Segmented Crash Pad amplifies the smooth feeling of your foot moving forward toward toe-off.

Finally, we’ve honed the application of 3D Fit Print to provide the right amount of stretch and structure on the Engineered Air Mesh in the Ghost 14 GTX to ensure the shoe accommodates the movement of your foot and offers an improved fit.

Just like the Ghost 14 GTX, the Cascadia 16 GTX also reps a Lightweight GORE-TEX Invisible Fit membrane. This trail-running shoe offers enhanced adaptability for a stable ride over all types of terrain. New release grooves at the heel shaped like an accordion compress and mold to the ground surface allowing the rest of your foot to stay centered. The midfoot provides a stable platform and at toe-off, additional forefoot release grooves allow for push off at multiple points of the foot.

In the Cascadia 16 GTX, you won’t need to sacrifice cushion to get that adaptability. The new DNA LOFT v2 midsole material provides cushioning that is 10% softer and 20% lighter than the previous versions while still adapting to your unique stride.

And soft certainly doesn’t mean weak. The updated Ballistic Rock Shield features new vertical grooves that allow your foot to move independently and adapt better to the ground surface, no matter where you step on a rock or root. These grooves work with those of the midsole and outsole so the whole shoe works together to adapt, flex, and protect.
