Crow High School - Eugene, Ore.
Number of years coaching:16 years.
At a glance: Through leading by example, Steve Grube shows his cross country and track teams at Crow High School in Eugene, Ore., that hard work, a healthy lifestyle and a Run Happy attitude go a long way. Even while battling lung cancer and undergoing chemotherapy, Steve runs the 2-mile warmup before practice with his student-athletes every day. As one nominator said, “[The kids] see him run, they see that he hasn’t quit fighting and they look up to him for that.”
What advice does Coach Grube give an athlete having a bad day to inspire them?
We’ve all had them. And it makes no sense to try to tell them they did well when we both know they didn’t. Look forward to the next race, put it behind you. In track, if they are doing multiple events in that meet, they next opportunity may come up quickly.
What makes Coach Grube Run Happy?
It’s great getting out to run any day. I still enjoy race day (after 37 years of racing) and trying to run a season best.
