The Brooks Cascadia trail running shoe provides stability, support, moderate cushioning, and dynamic underfoot protection so you can move over rocks, roots, and slippery surfaces with ease.

Designed for off-road running, Cascadia series shoes have a reputation as reliable and durable trail runners for tackling technical terrain. The new Cascadia 20 builds on this legacy with innovations meant to improve and elevate your trail running experience. Here’s a review of recent Cascadia models and how we’ve evolved one of our favorite trail runners.

Brooks Cascadia 20

The Cascadia 20 gives runners the confidence to explore any trail. With innovations in traction and comfort, we’ve enhanced important considerations in a trail running shoe. The Vibram Megagrip outsole offers the stickiness that’s critical on uneven or slippery surfaces, while nitrogen-infused DNA FLASH v2 foam provides lightweight cushioning. The Cascadia 20 features TrailAdapt technology for strategic flexibility and adaptable lugs, which comes in handy when landing on rocks or other obstacles.

Cascadia 20 vs. Cascadia 19

The Cascadia 20 is a substantially re-engineered trail runner with several significant differences from the Cascadia 19. The new DNA FLASH v2 foam in the midsole is lightweight and responsive. With 4mm of additional cushioning in the heel and forefoot, you'll feel a bit more cushioned than in the Cascadia 19. Finally, it's our first time including a Vibram Megagrip outsole, delivering traction to put you on solid footing over challenging terrain.

Brooks Cascadia 19

The Cascadia 19 offers a stable, dynamic ride, courtesy of the Trail Adapt System, which uses a flexible and articulated Ballistic Rock Shield integrated with the DNA LOFT v3 midsole. The TrailTack Green outsole provides all-terrain traction and is made with 25% recycled content while the airy mesh upper offers breathability on long trail runs.

Cascadia 19 vs. Cascadia 18

The Cascadia 19 introduced soft, responsive DNA LOFT v3 midsole foam to the collection and added 2mm of cushioning in the heel and 4mm in the forefoot compared to the Cascadia 18. The Cascadia 19 also reduced the midsole drop to 6mm from 8mm. Finally, there were improvements made to the Trail Adapt System to increase stability and flexibility versus the Cascadia 18.

Brooks Cascadia 18

The Cascadia 18 was designed to handle everything from gentle trails to running on technical terrain. It delivered a secure fit along with traction and stability underfoot courtesy of 4.5 mm lugs, the TrailTack Green Rubber outsole, and the Trail Adapt System’s integrated midsole, rock plate, and zonal outsole pods. Comfort was also a key consideration, with cushioning provided by soft DNA LOFT v2 foam.

Cascadia 18 vs. Cascadia 17

The main difference between the Cascadia 18 and the Cascadia 17 was an updated mesh with protective overlays in high-wear areas. This reiterated the collection’s focus on rugged durability, an important benefit for a trail shoe.

Brooks Cascadia 17

The Cascadia 17 brought a renewed focus on traction and stability to an already well-known trail running shoe. Both the Trail Adapt System and TrailTack Green Rubber outsole made their first appearance in the series with the Cascadia 17. Cushioning was provided by DNA LOFT v2 foam for long-lasting comfort on rough terrain.

Cascadia 17 vs. Cascadia 16

The Cascadia 17 represented a significant redesign following the Cascadia 16. The new shoe introduced the Trail Adapt System to the collection. This integrated the DNA LOFT v2 foam midsole with the Ballistic Rock Shield and zonal outsole pods for flexibility and protection. The Cascadia 17 also featured the new TrailTack Green Rubber outsole for added traction from 25% recycled material.

Brooks Cascadia 16

The Cascadia 16 featured DNA LOFT v2 foam cushioning, TrailTack Rubber outsoles and 4.3mm lugs for traction, and the Ballistic Rock Shield to protect from sharp objects on the trial. It was a marriage of comfort and utility that reinforced the Cascadia collection’s reputation as a great neutral trail runner.

Cascadia 16 vs. Cascadia 15

The Cascadia 16 introduced key features that weren’t present in the Cascadia 15, including DNA LOFT v2 foam cushioning, more flexible midsole and outsole construction, and an updated Ballistic Rock Shield to protect runners from sharp objects underfoot.
