Runners with high or stiff arches tend not to absorb impact easily, as they don’t pronate enough. The ideal shoes for high arches are the ones that combine soft cushioning, a neutral feel and help reduce pressure on the heel and forefoot.

Brooks offers plenty of running shoes for high arch profiles, helping improve comfort and reduce pain while running.

How do you know if you have high arches?

If you are not sure if you have high arches or not, we recommend visiting a local running shop and having your feet analysed by a Fit Expert. They will be able to recommend options accordingly.

You can even do a simple test at home to check if you have high arches. Simply wet the bottom of your foot with water and stand on a piece of paper or bathmat to check how your arch sits as well as the gap between you heel and ball of your foot. If there is little to no connection between the two points you likely have high arches but we’d still recommend seeing an expert for conformation.

What problems do high arches cause?

People with high arches often place more pressure on the ball and heel of their feet due to their arches not flattening much when walking and running, which can lead to some of the following issues:

The right kind of shoes can help reduce the discomfort cause by these issues.

What to look for in running shoes for high arches?

When choosing running shoes for high arches, look for features that support comfort and natural movement.

Since high arches tend to absorb less shock while hitting the ground, you need shoes that are well-cushioned and have a flexible midsole. Most runners will benefit from neutral shoes as these don’t over correct your stride. Their secure but non-restrictive fit help reduce pressure and irritation.

Best Brooks running shoes for high arches

Brooks offer plenty of running shoes for high arches. Shoe styles in our inventory are split into two sections, neutral and support.

  • Brooks Ghost is a reliable neutral shoe with adequate cushioning, making them ideal for everyday runs, walks or races
  • Brooks Glycerin provides maximum softness with plush cushioning and helps reduce impact on arches
  • Brooks Adrenaline GTS offers structured support with comfortable cushioning
  • Brooks Launch is our lightweight option with responsive cushioning, suitable for faster runs

Can you wear orthotics with high arches?

The support in running shoes is different from the support of insoles or orthotics. Brooks support styles feature our GuideRails technology, which supports your whole body in its natural stride while keeping excess movement in check. If you need support directly under your arch, our sock-liners are removable so that you can input your own insole or orthotic to achieve personalised arch support. If you are not sure if you need the support from our GuideRails or from an insole, we recommend visiting a local running shop and having your feet and gait analysed by a Fit Expert.

Should I size up for running shoes with high arches?

As we run, our feet tend to swell and may result with this issue. This may be due to not having enough volume within the shoe. We recommend the Straight Bar lacing technique or go up half a size. If the lacing technique or the size adjustment does not work, we recommend using our Shoe Finder to find the shoes that work best for you from the Brooks collection of running shoes.
