Biomechanics are as unique and varied as fingerprints. We all have our own quirks and patterns, and no two runners are exactly alike. It’s important to find a shoe that will accommodate your individual needs. And while no two runners are the same, many runners will share certain traits in common. One of those traits is called pronation.

What is pronation?

Pronation is a perfectly normal aspect of human biomechanics. Most of us will pronate to some degree during our strides. When the foot lands, the arch tends to elongate and lean inward somewhat. This is the body’s way of providing natural cushioning and shock absorption. For some folks, though, that pronation deviates a little too far from their bodies preferred motion pathway when they start running. This can lead to problems or potential injury if left unaddressed.

How do I know if I overpronate?

Overpronation can lead to a variety of problems such as pain in the feet, ankles, or knees. Folks who overpronate may be prone to issues in these areas and your first line of defense is going to be your footwear.
