Let’s put it simply: Dathan Ritzenhein is really fast. As a high school athlete he won national titles, followed by NCAA titles while running at the University of Colorado. He also set the USA 5,000m record and made three Olympic Teams. Now he’s chasing a USA Olympic berth in the marathon, the only distance he hasn’t completely dominated — yet.
It just makes me feel like I can be present the rest of the day. It may require a nap, but it makes the rest of my day more dedicated!
It still involves running but I love coaching. I coach some elite and sub elite runners that I just love to pour my extra energy into. My family is involved too and I love to have my kids see that passion in other young athletes.
Extra socks, Vaseline for my toes and two extra shirts — one for after the race and one for the awards stand.
Whenever the training gets difficult or monotonous, I just think about sitting in an office somewhere waiting for the clock to strike 5:00pm. Being a professional runner is really more a lifestyle than anything else. There are no weekends and the hours are all over, but it isn't bad if you love what you do.Dathan Ritzenhein
