Inspiring Coaches Finalist Joseph Prince

Sahuarita High School - Sahuarita, AZ

Number of years coaching: 30 years coaching both Cross Country and Track and Field

At a glance: During his time at Sahuarita High School, Coach Joe Prince has used his own personal story to inspire his students and runners. Diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, Coach Prince was overlooked as a runner until his high school coach, Tommie Smith saw his true potential and helped him keep his grades up and run in college and beyond. Now as a cancer survivor, track and cross country coach and special education teacher, Coach Prince shares the challenges he has faced in his lifetime to encourage and motivate his students to give everything they have each and every day.

What piece of advice does Coach Prince give an athlete having a bad day to inspire them?
One piece of advice given to me that I pass along to my athletes is "if it was meant to be, it is up to me." It is up to you as a runner to always give your best every single day.

What makes Coach Prince Run Happy?
In 1975 I was given only 6 – 9 months to live and I beat the odds, so just being alive and waking up every day is blessing.
