Los Angeles-Area High School Coach Awarded the Brooks Running 2013 Inspiring Coach of the Year Title

Leading Running Brand Recognizes Bishop Mora Salesian High School Coach for Ability to Foster Talent, Fuel Dreams

SEATTLE- Aug. 15, 2013

Good coaches help athletes cross finish lines. Inspiring Coaches dare them to run beyond athletic ambitions to even greater accomplishments off the track. Brooks Running Company today crowned Justin Torres, head cross-country and track coach from Bishop Mora Salesian High School, its 2013 Inspiring Coach of the Year for his ability to ignite athletic and academic fire in his athletes.

In his four-year tenure at Bishop Mora Salesian High School, Coach Torres has led the Mustangs to their first section championship in 32 years and multiple appearances at the state meet. He has also motivated handfuls of young athletes to attend college, five of whom earned athletic scholarship and many more were the first in their families to strive for four-year degrees.

For his award, Torres will receive $10,000 in Brooks performance running gear and $2,500 in cash to help fund team expenses. He will also receive a trip for two to the 2014 Brooks PR Invitational.

"The Brooks Inspiring Coaches program is our way of honoring and thanking those who direct, mentor and inspire our next generation of runners," says Brooks Running CEO Jim Weber. "The profound impression these leaders make on their athletes cultivates growth in running and in life. For the runners at Salesian High School, Coach Torres does that and more."

Now in its third year, the Inspiring Coaches program has given more than $360,000 in gear and cash to 61 high school programs across the country.

This year, Torres received his award in Seattle in front of a crowd of coaches and athletes from more than 30 states representing varying levels of youth running, from high schools to large universities and club teams.

"I'm speechless at receiving this award," says Torres. "My athletes and I work hard for our successes, even when they don't come so easily. So to win this award really gets me excited for the direction we're going and all the good it will do for my athletes."

Torres was chosen from a group of 26 finalists after athletes, former athletes, parents, fellow coaches, faculty and community members cast more than 17,000 votes via social media. Each finalist will receive $5,000 in Brooks performance running gear and $500 cash, as well as membership in Brooks' Inspire Daily (I.D.) program. The I.D. program is made of more than 2,000 coaches, elite runners and influencers who are active in their running communities and who share a passion for the Brooks brand.
