Guide Rails

What is it?

Guide Rails are built into the footwear midsole and revolutionize traditional stability technology found in running shoes. Delivering on-demand support, Guide Rails allow your hips, knees and joints to move within their unique motion path while you run – all without traditional posts.

This innovative new form of stability doesn't "correct" your stride. Instead it assists your body in finding its natural path, or Stride Signature.

How does it work?

A good way to think about how Guide Rails work is to picture a bobsled track. As the bobsled rockets down the icy course, the crew works to guide it down the "line" – the ideal path through the course. The fastest times are achieved when the sled glides effortlessly down the course with limited side-to-side movement.

Now, let’s apply this to the runner.

Much like the bobsled, runners perform best when they stay within their personal "line" – what we like to call their Natural Habitual Joint Motion. Guide Rails are designed to do just this – help runners maintain the most efficient and natural motion throughout the run.

Ideal Pressure Zones

What is it?

Ideal Pressure Zones distribute pressure evenly under your foot, transforming your run into a more comfortable and effortless ride from heel to forefoot.

How does it work?

When we take a step back to examine how runners run, we recognize that the highest amount of impact happens as you propel yourself forward. Knowing that this is the moment of highest impact, we’ve reshaped the outsole to disperse pressure evenly throughout your whole foot -- from heel to mid-foot to forefoot.

This means that impact is no longer felt in just one area of the foot which could cause “hot spots” (places that rub or cause pain throughout the run) but is instead dispersed evenly across the entire foot, leading to a smoother, float-like transition as you glide through your run.

Ideal Pressure Zones work in conjunction with our other shoe technologies to help runners maintain their most efficient and natural motion throughout the run.

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

Super DNA

What is it?

An adaptable midsole material that combines plushness with adaptability and provides 25% more cushioning than BioMoGo DNA.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Super DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Super DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Super DNA through a microscope, you’d see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further:

  • Super DNA is our latest stop on the DNA journey. Introduced with the Transcend and now found in the Glycerin, Super DNA combines the adaptability of DNA and adds 25% more cushioning than BioMoGo DNA while still maintaining the same energy return and biodegradable properties. Essentially you get the best of both worlds – adaptability and ultimate cushioning.

Other benefits include:

  • Significantly more cushioning than standard midsole materials
  • Increased energy-return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

I have never reviewed a shoe online, but I feel compelled to provide some feedback on the Transcend for those who may be on the fence - as the Transcend is a new model, and it's about $160.

I am a 34 year old male, 5'10" 185lbs. In my late twenties, I was running 5K and 10K road races at about an 8 minute/mile pace. Plantar fasciitis set in and took me out of the game completely. I quit running for a full three years. A chiropractor friend of mine suggested that I modify my natural stride (big time heel striker) and try running on my toes. At about that same time, I received a pair of Adrenaline GTS 14s as a gift. Gradually, I have re-learned to run on my toes, and the Adrenalines were a critical tool in that process. However, as it still feels very unnatural for me to toe strike, I find that with the Adrenalines, I have to consciously focus on every stride in order to get my foot flat on the ground. Also, the Adrenalines did not offer the cushiony ride I found myself wanting.

Enter the Transcends.

These shoes are incredible. I knew within the first tenth of a mile on my first run that they were exactly what I needed. They provide a super soft ride. I find that with the soft DNA forefoot, my feet are less tired after a run. Also, and this is probably my favorite part, it's like the shoes do the thinking for me and place my feet on the ground properly. I still have to remind myself to be a toe striker, but it just feels so much more natural and easy with the Transcends. I could not be any happier with a pair of shoes. I'm still not back to my top form. But I'm now able to run 12 - 15 miles per week (Which, those of you with plantar fasciitis will know, is a beautiful thing!)
If you are like me, and you have finicky or weak arches, or if you just have a heavier stride in general, I would strongly suggest that you try the Transcends. I will definitely buy another pair. And I really hope that Brooks sticks with this model.
One last thing - I read/watched some of the reviews before buying, and saw a runner's magazine that knocked the Trancends as being a bit too heavy. I have not found that to be a problem, or even to be an accurate comment. They don't seem any heavier than the Adrenalines, at least not to me.

The heel to toe drop on this shoe is ideal for me. The cushioning feels very good (I'm a 230 lb runner). Lacing is comfortable, toe box wide enough, weight is fine. My main problem with this shoe is that the material used to trim the upper portion of the shoe near the toes is very firm/hard. Where my foot bends, right near the toes, the firm material bends inward and pushes into my foot and is very uncomfortable after about 3 miles. I want to return these shoes, but not sure the store will take them back. They may just end up being a short distance shoe, but I had high hopes they would become my distance trainer.

Comments about Transcend:

I love using the Transcend as a recovery day shoe. It's supportive and has good cushion allowing my legs a chance to recover and to help avoid injury.

Also, I used them all day twice at Disneyland and they are the first shoe that kept my feet comfy after two days of all day walking/standing. That's quite the achievement.

I run cross country and track at my school and I was on my fourth pair of Adrenalines when my feet started hurting and I started getting small injuries. I switched to the Transcends and Loved them! They are so comfortable! Feel about as heavy as the adrenalines and I haven't had any issues with them so far over the three months I've had them.

      Comments about Transcend:

I was a loyal Trance consumer. Loved the shoe and was sorry to see it phased out. Ran pain free for 5 years. The Transcend is a good shoe design-wise. However it isn't as stable as the Trance, and perhaps more importantly, the sole especially at the front of the shoe has worn out very quickly.

      Comments about Transcend:

I'm an avid runner, averaging 25-30 miles a week during off season. The shoe is comfortable and light. I have low arches but this shoes has enough support to help me. The wear on the shoe is bad. I had the shoes for about 2 months when I started to notice tearing and rips on the top of the shoe. I mainly run on paved roads. For being such an expensive shoe you figured it would have better durability. The shoe definitely needs improvements.
