DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

The best shoe I've run in!

Prior to buying a pair of Ravenna 5's, I ran in the ASICS Gel-Kayano 16, 20, ASICS GT-2150, GT-2170, GT-2000 2, Saucony Kinvara 4, and Saucony Guide 5,6, and 7. Out of all of these shoes, I had an orange and black pair of Saucony Guide 6's that lasted me a very long time and I was so pleased with the way they looked, performed, and felt. After running in the Guide 7's, I was a bit disappointed; they felt heavy and clunky even though it's one of the lightest shoes on the market.

Mizuno is a great brand and no disrespect to them, but the Inspire 10 didn't feel great on my foot. When I tried on the Ravenna 5, I fell instantly in love. It gave me the perfect amount of support but it felt lighter than the Guide 7, even though the latter is lighter.

Along with the moderate amount of control you get in the Ravenna 5, you also get an upper which is breathable and fits perfectly with the strap that connects to the midsole of the shoe. Additionally, the middle of the shoe makes a lot of contact with the ground because of the shrinkage of the midfoot shank, which really was pleasing because I am a midfoot striker with flat feet. I also really enjoyed the forefoot of the shoe; it has a flexible forefoot thanks to the Omega Flex Grooves, you get boatloads of traction, which is awesome because you can run on the trails without slipping, and because the forefoot is curved up a bit more than the Guide 7, you also get a fast feel in the shoe during toe off, which helps on faster runs and speed work.

I know for certain that when my time is over in my current Ravenna 5's, I'm going to get another pair. Thank you Brooks for making such an outstanding shoe. Run happy!

    Comments about Ravenna 5:

I have been bouncing around the different Shoes that Brooks has to offer from stability shoes to neutral shoes and I believe I have finally found the best one for me! The Ravenna 5 is light weight and has done me exceptionally well! It offers a good amount of support for the mild over pronators and those who have higher than average arches. It is a sad day today when I realized that I need to retire them after logging over 600 miles on the pair.

I will buy another just like them!

          Comments about Ravenna 5:

I've had my shoes for a couples weeks and am loving them. They fit great and make for a very comfortable run. I've run in them outside and on the treadmill ranging from 3 to 11 miles. They are nice and light weight and can really go the distance. I've also taken them out when the roads and sidewalks were wet and they seemed to have good traction. As for durability, I cannot comment on it yet. I'm hoping they will be durable since I want to be able to use them for a long time!

          Comments about Ravenna 5:

I've been running in these for 3 months over various distances indoor and outdoor. I also have what I've heard is the less common combination of high arches but slight pronation rather than supination. I run neutral on left foot landings and slightly pronate with the right leg. Go figure. Brooks said use a shoe geared toward where you need the help and so I had been running in Adrenalines until the Ravenna 5. After getting orthotics following a plantar fasciitis issue back with my Adrenaline 9, the support was now more than I needed. I still like my Adrenalines (3 pair of the 13s before Ravenna 5). I'm back to using them with the Brooks included sock liner and have moved my custom orthoses over to my Ravenna 5s. I like the secure feeling and support of the Adrenaline but the slightly softer feel and heel-to-toe drop on the Ravenna. It helps with mid-foot landing and higher turnover. I also wanted to try the Ravenna because the 5 weighs an ounce less than my Adrenalines - even .1 oz less than the Ghost! The toe box feels just slightly roomier too than my GTS. No issues yet and cushy comfy. Longest run so far has been half marathon distance on a treadmill.
