DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

The best shoe I've run in!

Prior to buying a pair of Ravenna 5's, I ran in the ASICS Gel-Kayano 16, 20, ASICS GT-2150, GT-2170, GT-2000 2, Saucony Kinvara 4, and Saucony Guide...Read complete review

Prior to buying a pair of Ravenna 5's, I ran in the ASICS Gel-Kayano 16, 20, ASICS GT-2150, GT-2170, GT-2000 2, Saucony Kinvara 4, and Saucony Guide 5,6, and 7. Out of all of these shoes, I had an orange and black pair of Saucony Guide 6's that lasted me a very long time and I was so pleased with the way they looked, performed, and felt. After running in the Guide 7's, I was a bit disappointed; they felt heavy and clunky even though it's one of the lightest shoes on the market.

Mizuno is a great brand and no disrespect to them, but the Inspire 10 didn't feel great on my foot. When I tried on the Ravenna 5, I fell instantly in love. It gave me the perfect amount of support but it felt lighter than the Guide 7, even though the latter is lighter.

Along with the moderate amount of control you get in the Ravenna 5, you also get an upper which is breathable and fits perfectly with the strap that connects to the midsole of the shoe. Additionally, the middle of the shoe makes a lot of contact with the ground because of the shrinkage of the midfoot shank, which really was pleasing because I am a midfoot striker with flat feet. I also really enjoyed the forefoot of the shoe; it has a flexible forefoot thanks to the Omega Flex Grooves, you get boatloads of traction, which is awesome because you can run on the trails without slipping, and because the forefoot is curved up a bit more than the Guide 7, you also get a fast feel in the shoe during toe off, which helps on faster runs and speed work.

I know for certain that when my time is over in my current Ravenna 5's, I'm going to get another pair. Thank you Brooks for making such an outstanding shoe. Run happy!

    Comments about Ravenna 5:

I had thought I found my perfect shoe in the Mizuno Wave Inspire's, but will stick with the Brooks Ravenna for the foreseeable future. These shoes fit like a glove, much better than the Mizuno's and don't feel as clunky. Interestingly enough, until I tired these shoes out, the Mizuno's didn't seem clunky. I did need to order a half size bigger for the correct fit, but was told of this ahead of time at a local running store.

These shoes are light and responsive. Very comfortable. They provide quite a bit of support and I will continue to put the miles on. Love the colors and look, but they were not determining factors in my purchase. So far, no blisters or any issues. Highly, highly recommend.

    Comments about Ravenna 5:

I like these shoes but not as much as the Ravenna 4.

They feel lighter and a little less durable. I have had them for (2) weeks & I fear that they will not make 500 miles.

    I run around 30-35 miles a week.

Hopefully the Ranvenna 6's are closer to the Ravenna 4's

3rd & 4th pair of Ravenna 5. I'm going to switch them off & on so they'll last longer through a 16 week training for half marathon. My pronation causes me to wear through shoes in 5 months.

      Comments about Ravenna 5:

I routinely run 20 miles (+/-) a week on a treadmill (and occasionally on paved trails when the weather is nice). I have been running in Ravenna's (2 on) for years. This shoe is exactly what I need, like, and want. I love its light weight, comfort, and durability. A pair typically lasts me the better part of a year (700-800 miles). Occasionally, the color scheme is not my favorite, but I love the red ones I just bought. They even make my size 12.5 feet look smaller.

      I have wide feet

      Comments about Ravenna 5:

I like the shoes a lot. They took some getting used to. These were recommended by the app based on my previous New Balance shoes I normally wear. The only complaint isn't the shoe necessarily - but I have wide feet, and normally get a 4E width. This one is only available in 2E, and so initially it was narrow. It has become more comfortable as I have stretched the shoes out. If I try another pair of brooks, i would check out ones that were available as 4E widths instead. Otherwise, true to width and sizing.
