Inspiring Coaches Finalist Christian Cuthbert

Veritas School - Richmond, VA

Number of years coaching: 19 years coaching Track and Cross Country.

At a glance: Coach Christian Cuthbert started the track and cross country program from the ground up. He teaches his athletes that everything in life is an important part of training including nutrition and school work. Coach Cuthbert works consistently with philanthropic causes around the world and is extremely involved with the running community in Kenya. He co-founded a running camp called "Run with the Kenyans" and is not only using the camp to develop local runners by pairing them with elite Kenyan World Athletes, but also to foster goodwill and to raise funds for projects and educational camps for Kenyan kids.

What piece of advice does Coach Cuthbert give an athlete having a bad day to inspire them?
Bad days come and it’s OK to be disappointed. Injuries, bad races, tough training days are all great opportunities to learn and grow—do not allow those opportunities to improve to pass you by.

What makes Coach Cuthbert Run Happy?
Unfortunately it has been a long time since I have been able to "Run Happy." But every time I see one of my runners run until they are completely spent, every time I see them push their limits and dare greatly, I always strap on my trainers and get a couple days of training out of it.
