DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

I purchased this shoe after running in the Mizuno Wave Inspire - I had the Wave Inspire 9s and loved them, got the Wave Inspire 10s and they were awful, nothing like the 9s. Found this to be common feedback on the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10s. Purchased this shoe after trying it out at a local store and have put about 30-40 miles on them so far with no problems. They seem to be breaking in well and feel as supportive at the end of 10 miles as at the beginning. I've never run in the Ravenna 5s, so no commentary as to whether these are better or worse - only that I like them so far and they have been far better than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10s.

Bottom line: Two new pain points on uppers make the Ravenna 6 uncomfortable to run in.

Details: After a gait analysis with my sports injury podiatrist, I switched to Ravenna 5s and believe they were a gift from Heaven. I have a shoe rack FULL of Ravenna 5s that I use for daily runs AND races (usually half-marathons). So I was excited when the Ravenna 6 came out, and tried the new model right away.

The uppers feel stiffer but I can tell you exactly what's wrong. To the left and right of the base eyelets are "pinstripes" -- accenting. They are also on the Ravenna 5, but on the Ravenna 6, they are more pronounced, and the "ink" feels more like rubber. The lines are too thick and heavy, so that when you flex your feet for a toe-off, the two points "dimple in" and press against the tops of my feet. This is UNCOMFORTABLE. When I'm pushing off hard and fast in a race I can't imagine how painful this will be, because I just tested it in a store and it was enough for the tops of my feet to feel sore.

Unless this gets fixed with an adjusted version, I will be skipping the Ravenna 6 altogether, and will wait for the Ravenna 7. In the meantime, I'll stock up on the Ravenna 5s to last me the cycle. Sorry -- I LOVE Brooks!

I usually wear the Glycerin or Adrenaline but I thought I'd try the Ravenna (loved the color). These are comfortable and supportive but the toe room is much smaller than the others. I like them but will stick with the other 2.

        Comments about Ravenna 6:

These were my first pair of Brooks. I originally had Nike Shox Roadsters because I run on the road and need the cushion. I love these shoes for some reasons and hate them for others. I was so excited to get them and I want to absolutely love them but there is something up with the inside sole of these shoes. I tie them up and get going for my 5k and the outside of my foot along the edge and bottom of my feet starts to hurt. I have to stop, re-adjust the shoes or keep going and suck it up and deal with the pain (which sucks. I went into a local store to get my gait analyzed and these were picked out for me there. They said I had a mild pronation but they only had me walk for them and not run so I am not entirely sure if that makes a difference or not. They feel good when I first put them on but after I spend some time in them, usually something will hurt unless I have them on just right. I don't get it. Its annoying but I really like these shoes and I am past the return date to try something different. I don't know if it is just me, if there is a certain way I need to tie these shoes to prevent it but unless I have them on just right, either the arch is off so it doesn't have the support, or my outside of my foot feels like there is so much padding it pushes into my foot and hurts. I am still looking up ways to try to get these shoes comfortable all the time, but so fair no luck :/

            Comments about Ravenna 6:

I use my own inserts (insoles) to support my arch. This shoe uniquely "hugs" your foot as you lace it up. I need the fabric upper to accommodate my bunions, but don't want a Wide size because it is too big. I ordered it in Medium width and it fits great. I use this shoe for all my gym activities - cardio, weights, whole body exercises where I need stability. Great shoe!
