DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

I purchased this shoe after running in the Mizuno Wave Inspire - I had the Wave Inspire 9s and loved them, got the Wave Inspire 10s and they were awful, nothing like the 9s. Found this to be common feedback on the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10s. Purchased this shoe after trying it out at a local store and have put about 30-40 miles on them so far with no problems. They seem to be breaking in well and feel as supportive at the end of 10 miles as at the beginning. I've never run in the Ravenna 5s, so no commentary as to whether these are better or worse - only that I like them so far and they have been far better than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10s.

Bottom line: Two new pain points on uppers make the Ravenna 6 uncomfortable to run in.

Details: After a gait analysis with my sports injury podiatrist, I switched to Ravenna 5s and believe they were a gift from Heaven. I have a shoe rack FULL of Ravenna 5s that I use for daily runs AND races (usually half-marathons). So I was excited when the Ravenna 6 came out, and tried the new model right away.

The uppers feel stiffer but I can tell you exactly what's wrong. To the left and right of the base eyelets are "pinstripes" -- accenting. They are also on the Ravenna 5, but on the Ravenna 6, they are more pronounced, and the "ink" feels more like rubber. The lines are too thick and heavy, so that when you flex your feet for a toe-off, the two points "dimple in" and press against the tops of my feet. This is UNCOMFORTABLE. When I'm pushing off hard and fast in a race I can't imagine how painful this will be, because I just tested it in a store and it was enough for the tops of my feet to feel sore.

Unless this gets fixed with an adjusted version, I will be skipping the Ravenna 6 altogether, and will wait for the Ravenna 7. In the meantime, I'll stock up on the Ravenna 5s to last me the cycle. Sorry -- I LOVE Brooks!

      Comments about Ravenna 6:

I am a 5K runner, averaging 12-15 miles each week. When I first purchased these shoes, I was skeptical about the stiffness and how I would like them during my runs. I am a Physical Therapist, and I do a lot of walking at work. I wore these shoes to work for a few days before first running in them. When I rain in them, I was surprised by how good my feet and legs felt. Typically, I get almsot turf toe-like symptoms in my right 1st metatarsophalangeal joint towards the end of my runs, because I tend to overpronate on my right foot, especially. With these shoes, I can run symptom-free! I highly recommend them, but I think wearing them with walking before running was helpful.

My favorite had been Adrenaline for some time but noticed the cushion at the ball of the foot seemed to wear out fast causing pain so when the new catalog came and show cased Ravenna with an adjustable arch I gave them a try. Ravenna has now moved to the top of my list for comfort, plenty of cushion in the ball of the foot, great fit, and the new arch is awesome! Love the new colors as well :)

          Comments about Ravenna 6:

I bought a pair of these in the store and I am loving them. I haven't been able to run without pain in years and these shoes are helping. I liked the Ravenna 4s but these Ravenna 6's are much better for my feet.

I can understand the reviews where people are unhappy because previous models worked for them For me, the upgrade has improved my ability to run. The new design is a little stiffer but it is definitely working for me. I have ordered a pair in each color to use for work, running and every day. Heel pain has prevented me from wearing anything but Teva Hurricanes and the Ravennas for years now.

My only complaint would be that the laces are TOO short. I have the white pair and am anxious to see if I will like the other 2 colors as well. I hope Brooks keeps this new design!

So pleased with my purchase of the Ravenna 6! Yes, this is a narrow shoe, but that's great for me. I have narrow flat feet. This shoe gives me the support and motion control that I was looking for and the cushion is so comfortable. I'm running again in comfort!
