DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

      Comments about Ravenna 6:

I run 3 days a week and these shoes are much, much more durable that the previous pair that I had. So glad that I made the purchase and was able to find them in my size online because I have a small foot and it is hard to find shoes that fit when I visit a retail location. I'll never stray away from the Brooks brand again.

      Comments about Ravenna 6:

I've run in several other brands. For whatever reason Brooks are the best fit and give me the least issues. No black toenails, no plantar fascia issues, no top of the foot pain. I work in physical therapy with orthopedic and sports injuries. I also have a great deal of continuing education focused on running. This shoe in particular probably saved my marathon training and marathon itself. I feel locked into the shoe, no calcaneal issues from pistoning. It's relatively light for a mileage shoe.

A few issues... The upper could be lighter and more breathable in the toe box. The plastic on top doesn't let the shoe distort like it should and I can see it making issues for certain types of feet.

I also don't like much under my arch. Maybe this is preference, but I'd prefer a strong foot and less support. Just my two cents.

        Comments about Ravenna 6:

I've been running marathons in Ravennas since the Ravenna 2. The 6 is still comfortable. I can run 10+ miles in them right out the box. I like that the toe box is bigger. They fit the shape of my foot really well.

The reinforced top of the toe area takes a little getting used to, but doesn't interfere in any way. It's just strange to the touch. The tongue is also bigger. Again, just took a little getting used to.

Like I said, the 6 is not better or worse than the 5. The changes don't really impact my runs one way or the other. I'll still get them.

          Comments about Ravenna 6:

After putting 500 miles on a Ravenna 5's (which I hated from the get-go) I was REALLY looking forward to these. My first impressions (in no particular order):
          1) I finally get the "adjustable saddle" thingy! It seems a little grippier than previous models and it really helps guys like me (with narrow feet, slightly high arches). Once you get it up, it, stays put. LOVE IT.
          2) There is more padding at the heel cuff, which really doesn't matter to me in this model. So, meh...fine by me.
          3) Other reviews have complained about the external reinforcement over the toe-box. I have no problems with it, but I can see where it might rub.
          4) The toe box is still a bit too wide for me, but it's the best one that fits my narrow/regular width. I've had "baggier" toe boxes and Brooks is known for being narrower than the others, so no complaints there.
          5) The ride is familiar and, at first, I wasn't too impressed, but I put about 50 miles on them this week and they're getting better, i.e. - just the right amount of cushioning without being too cushy. Coming right out of the 5's (which I hated...did I mention that?), they don't feel as "dead".
          6) It seems that the instep stability area is not as firm as it was on the 3's or 4's. I really miss that. Please, Brooks, don't go too soft on that section.
          7) I've never really like the tongue length on Brooks. They seem about a half centimeter too short and when I have them laced all the way to the top, they cut too tight on the top of my foot. I've overcome that by creative lacing and had to do it with these as well. It's probably just me, but it's been that way with every Brooks I've worn.
          8) I never really care about color, but "Junebug"? "Lime Punch"? That's just too cool...had to have them.
