DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

      Comments about Ravenna 6:

After putting 500 miles on a Ravenna 5's (which I hated from the get-go) I was REALLY looking forward to these. My first impressions (in no particular order):
      1) I finally get the "adjustable saddle" thingy! It seems a little grippier than previous models and it really helps guys like me (with narrow feet, slightly high arches). Once you get it up, it, stays put. LOVE IT.
      2) There is more padding at the heel cuff, which really doesn't matter to me in this model. So, meh...fine by me.
      3) Other reviews have complained about the external reinforcement over the toe-box. I have no problems with it, but I can see where it might rub.
      4) The toe box is still a bit too wide for me, but it's the best one that fits my narrow/regular width. I've had "baggier" toe boxes and Brooks is known for being narrower than the others, so no complaints there.
      5) The ride is familiar and, at first, I wasn't too impressed, but I put about 50 miles on them this week and they're getting better, i.e. - just the right amount of cushioning without being too cushy. Coming right out of the 5's (which I hated...did I mention that?), they don't feel as "dead".
      6) It seems that the instep stability area is not as firm as it was on the 3's or 4's. I really miss that. Please, Brooks, don't go too soft on that section.
      7) I've never really like the tongue length on Brooks. They seem about a half centimeter too short and when I have them laced all the way to the top, they cut too tight on the top of my foot. I've overcome that by creative lacing and had to do it with these as well. It's probably just me, but it's been that way with every Brooks I've worn.
      8) I never really care about color, but "Junebug"? "Lime Punch"? That's just too cool...had to have them.

      Comments about Ravenna 6:

Fit feels the same as the 4 and 5 for the most part; just the right amount of support and the upper hugs your foot well. My only issue is the synthetic M-shaped toebox overlay rubs my forth toe, causing a blister/corn. The 3rd and 4th edition of this shoe had a similar problem for me. The 5th was fine as this overlay was not present on that version. I typically go through a pair every 2 months, so I have worn a lot of pairs of this shoe and it's a shame this issue has comeback:(

      Not the same Ravenna

        Comments about Ravenna 6:

I've strictly worn Brooks Ravenna since the first version hit the shelves six or so years ago. During that time, I would say I owned 15 pairs of the Ravenna series. They had a certain fit unlike any other shoe I had tried. I have stayed injury free and loved the shoe.

But the Ravenna 6 misses the mark for me. They do not fit like the previous versions. The have a large toe box and are bulky. They are not necessarily heavier, but there is certain clumsiness to them. When I run in them, I can feel stress in my shins which stems from the loose and clumsy fit. Something I had not felt in previous versions.

Time to donate these ones and get another pair of the 5s.

        Comments about Ravenna 6:

I'm a big Ravenna fan and have run hundreds of miles in the 4s and 5s. These feel pretty similar to the 5s except for one issue. There's a new overlay that you can see in the front of the shoe, and these are stitched on. On the inside of the shoe, you may rub against the overlay as it creates a bit of a ridge. I've only had this issue in the right foot, and have tried on a few more which have had the same issue. There's just less vertical space along the outer side of the foot. As a result, my first run was 7 miles and resulted in a bad blister. I waited for it to heal and tried again, only this time with a lubricant on the foot and thinner socks and have had no issues. You just need to try these on and see if it's an issue or not. Ironically, it was a Brooks sock which may have been a bit thicker than perhaps a Smartwool or Feetures option. I'd rate 5 stars otherwise.
