DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).
  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

After putting 500 miles on a Ravenna 5's (which I hated from the get-go) I was REALLY looking forward to these. My first impressions (in no particular order):
1) I finally get the "adjustable saddle" thingy! It seems a little grippier than previous models and it really helps guys like me (with narrow feet, slightly high arches). Once you get it up, it, stays put. LOVE IT.
2) There is more padding at the heel cuff, which really doesn't matter to me in this model. So, meh...fine by me.
3) Other reviews have complained about the external reinforcement over the toe-box. I have no problems with it, but I can see where it might rub.
4) The toe box is still a bit too wide for me, but it's the best one that fits my narrow/regular width. I've had "baggier" toe boxes and Brooks is known for being narrower than the others, so no complaints there.
5) The ride is familiar and, at first, I wasn't too impressed, but I put about 50 miles on them this week and they're getting better, i.e. - just the right amount of cushioning without being too cushy. Coming right out of the 5's (which I hated...did I mention that?), they don't feel as "dead".
6) It seems that the instep stability area is not as firm as it was on the 3's or 4's. I really miss that. Please, Brooks, don't go too soft on that section.
7) I've never really like the tongue length on Brooks. They seem about a half centimeter too short and when I have them laced all the way to the top, they cut too tight on the top of my foot. I've overcome that by creative lacing and had to do it with these as well. It's probably just me, but it's been that way with every Brooks I've worn.
8) I never really care about color, but "Junebug"? "Lime Punch"? That's just too cool...had to have them.

I'm a big Ravenna fan and have run hundreds of miles in the 4s and 5s. They've cured my plantar fasciitis by not allowing my arch to collapse. I've run once in these and they feel very similar to the 5s with one exception. There's a new overlay in the shape of an M (or W if you flip) which lies at the front of the shoe. This is stitched on and the stitching and overlay on the inside of the shoe reduces the vertical space along the outside of the forefoot. For me, this meant a blister. I've ruled out that it's the size or just my shoe by trying a few more on. I recommend trying these on and paying attention to that area to make sure it's ok for your foot. Interestingly, this is only an issue in the right shoe. No issues with this in my existing Ravenna 5s or PureCadence 3s. They're just not as roomy as previous models. I'm currently trying to work with them by wearing a thinner sock and using some Body Glide in that area.

    Comments about Ravenna 6:

I run in Brooks for 30 years. Now that I'm older and don't run anymore, I walk in them. I tried walking shoes, but they made my feet sore. I figured if they are great for running the same should apply to walking and it does. Great fit, and feet don't get sore. I have a bad ankle so the next pair I buy will have more support, even though the ones I have are fine.

My wife and I run 3-5 miles almost daily (rain or shine) with our border-collie so we need good shoes that handle well in a variety of conditions. I've used Ghosts in the past but wanted something a little more durable (they wore quickly) and had heard good things about the Ravennas. So far so good!

I only wear the ravenas. I have had reconstructive surgery to my foot and a spinal laminectomy, despite this I run and walk several miles per day. The ravenas are the only shoe I've tried that offer the constant support for my foot and the shock absorption for my back that allow me to comfortably continue my pursuits. Also I have completed several Tough Mudder races thanks to the ravenas!!!!!!

I use these mainly for working out in the gym (including running on the indoor track) and they are great. I haven't taken them out for road running yet, since they are still new I am avoiding getting them too dirty and still using my older brooks (ravenna 5) for outdoor running for now. I loved my previous pair of brooks, so the new model of the ravenna continued the excellent fit, comfort, and stability I had come to expect.
