DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Rounded Heel

What is it?

“Rounded Heel” is just a fancy name that we like to use for the rounded and reduced heel on our shoes. The slight curvature in the heel vastly improves the alignment of your body, encouraging a more efficient stride.

How does it work?

It’s really quite simple. The curvature in the heel works to align the body by shifting the contact point forward. As you hit the ground there is a greater clearance distance under the middle of your heel, which aligns force through the center of your ankle, thus reducing internal stress on your body.

This shoe has the perfect balance of flexibility, cushioning, and light weight for me. I absolutely love the lacing system. Everything from the size of the eyelets, texture of the laces, and the thin but padded tongue work together to create the perfect fit. It's easy to lace how you like, and stays that way through the entire run. Strangely this shoe feels very different from the pureflow 3. I tried them on side-by-side in a retail store and the pureflow 3 felt much more cushioned and soft to the point that it seemed far less responsive and less flexible, so I went with the pure flow 4 which was perfect for me. I have been running 3-8 miles per day in them for a few weeks and everything feels wonderful.

I was a huge fan of the PureFlow 1 and 2, bought the PureFlow3 and didn't love them (but still wore them), and was hoping for an improvement on the 4's. Unfortunately I think I have to break up with this line of shoes- despite it being my favorite for the past few years! Took these on a run this weekend and had to stop at halfway to switch back to a pair of old shoes. The shoes look great, and maybe for someone who appreciates a less flexible shoe, they are a good choice. But, the sole is so stiff that for me, I can hear my foot "stomping" the ground with each step.

The shoe just doesn't feel right when I go to take off and flex my foot. While these factors were annoying, what made me return the shoe was the nav-band. For some reason on the PureFlow4, the nav-band created a pressure point on the bones of my arch that ended up bruised by the end of my run. Sort of like my weight was being distributed inward over that one hard piece of fabric/plastic rather than being cushioned by the sole. This could just be a personal anomaly, but I definitely had and still have some pain from that run.

The thing that I always loved about the PureProject shoes was that they were so comfortable I never had to "break them in". Perhaps with continued running the shoes loosen up, but I couldn't make it past the first one.

I love the Pure Flow 4 shoe!

By Island girl

About Me Avid Athlete

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Cushions Impact
  • Good Arch Support
  • Good Traction
  • Lightweight
  • Responsive

Cons

  • There Isn't A Con

Best Uses

  • Gym
  • Walking
  • With Orthotics/Inserts

I usually wear the Ghost 7 shoe and wanted to try a lighter weight and a little bit lower to the ground type of neutral shoe. I have very small ankles and have injured them several times because of rolling my ankles over (especially with some competitors shoes). I never had that problem with the Ghost, but wanted to see how the Pure Flow compared and I love them. If I am walking on uneven terrain I feel like my ankles are very protected. Also the top of the shoe is very comfortable! I would also love to see these shoes made with more color choices

This is my 4th pair of Brooks in 2 years. I really like them but find that they wear out soon. After I bought my second pair, I started alternating wearing them. I teach exercise 3 days a week and do wear them on weekends. Still, I alternate them. I pronate so I notice the wear on the outer edges of the sole and inner edges of the toe box sole. I still recommend them because of the comfort and the light weightless.Took my first pair on a month-long walking vacation to Italy.
