DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Rounded Heel

What is it?

“Rounded Heel” is just a fancy name that we like to use for the rounded and reduced heel on our shoes. The slight curvature in the heel vastly improves the alignment of your body, encouraging a more efficient stride.

How does it work?

It’s really quite simple. The curvature in the heel works to align the body by shifting the contact point forward. As you hit the ground there is a greater clearance distance under the middle of your heel, which aligns force through the center of your ankle, thus reducing internal stress on your body.

I run 4 days a week and hike 5 days a week and wear these shoes for both activities. They are lightweight and exeptional for training in. The 4s are a little tighter then the previous version, though hoping they get a little bit better when they wear in. I am not exactic about the new shoe tongue, its a bit small, but thats just being picky. These have been my favorite pair of shoes I've ever ownded though and look forward to continuing to purchase through Brooks.

I was a huge fan of the PureFlow 1 and 2, bought the PureFlow3 and didn't love them (but still wore them), and was hoping for an improvement on the 4's. Unfortunately I think I have to break up with this line of shoes- despite it being my favorite for the past few years! Took these on a run this weekend and had to stop at halfway to switch back to a pair of old shoes. The shoes look great, and maybe for someone who appreciates a less flexible shoe, they are a good choice. But, the sole is so stiff that for me, I can hear my foot "stomping" the ground with each step.

The shoe just doesn't feel right when I go to take off and flex my foot. While these factors were annoying, what made me return the shoe was the nav-band. For some reason on the PureFlow4, the nav-band created a pressure point on the bones of my arch that ended up bruised by the end of my run. Sort of like my weight was being distributed inward over that one hard piece of fabric/plastic rather than being cushioned by the sole. This could just be a personal anomaly, but I definitely had and still have some pain from that run.

The thing that I always loved about the PureProject shoes was that they were so comfortable I never had to "break them in". Perhaps with continued running the shoes loosen up, but I couldn't make it past the first one.

Love these shoes!

I've had all of the PureFlows except the PureFlow 3s. I like these just as much, if not more, than my other pairs. I didn't find the shoes run small like some of the other reviewers said. As someone who has a narrower foot, I can appreciate that the toe box is a little narrower than in past models. I do prefer the tongue of the older shoes in the series, but don't find this one particularly bothersome. Laces are great and stay tied better than past models!

So far I've worn them for treadmill running and gym use. Once the weather breaks I will be wearing them for outside running. I've previously worn Brooks adrenalines (which I love) in need for a support shoe. My doctor recommended I try a less supportive shoe and more muscle strengthening. I was nervous of the switch but have no complaints so far about the shoe. It was a fairly smooth transition and I'm looking forward to continuing to run in them. I had read somewhere to get these shoes a half size up but they have a little more extra room than I need. So I recommend getting them true to size.
