The men's PureConnect 4 lightweight running shoes sports a minimalist profile but have it where it counts. Adaptive BioMoGo DNA in the midsole responds to your every step to provide custom cushion while the rounded heel helps your body move in its natural running motion. The toe-flex outsole pods move independently, giving you tremendous support and flexibility, and the conformable nav-band around the upper wraps your foot in featherweight comfort.

Like our core line, we hold the PureConnect 4 to the industry’s highest weartest and durability standards. Because of their lightweight construction, you can expect shoes the PureConnect 4 to last approximately 250-300 miles.

DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Rounded Heel

What is it?

“Rounded Heel” is just a fancy name that we like to use for the rounded and reduced heel on our shoes. The slight curvature in the heel vastly improves the alignment of your body, encouraging a more efficient stride.

How does it work?

It’s really quite simple. The curvature in the heel works to align the body by shifting the contact point forward. As you hit the ground there is a greater clearance distance under the middle of your heel, which aligns force through the center of your ankle, thus reducing internal stress on your body.

Compared to the original (version 1) Pure Connects, these Pure Connect 4s are quite cushy. This makes sense as the minimal movement is slowly dying away. That being said, the Pure Connect 1 felt really connected to the road/trail, which I miss. But, these work well for me because I use these shoes for both trail and road, and the added cushion provides better traction (on trail, downhill, and wetness) while still being relatively light. I remember when I first put on my Pure Connect 1s. They felt featherlight and I had this energy to run. I'm sad that these are the lightest non-track shoes in Brooks' current line.

On the first few runs, I didn't notice any problems, but after getting up to 6mi, the arch support band caused some blisters in both feet in the same spot. I might have to cut the bands on the inside, but will experiment with different insoles.

After buying and falling in LOVE with a pair of Brooks Pure Connect 3's about 18 months ago, getting the Pure Connect 4 was a no brainer. The shoes arrived (x-mas gift) and I waited for the weather to warm up to take them for a spin. When I first put them on, I immediately did not like the padded tongue, which made the shoes feel a little 'sloppy' compared to the PC3. Other than that, I was excited. Went out for a run and by mile 3, the toe box on the right shoe had collapsed (crease from the tip to the emblem) and was now rubbing against my toes (between 1st and 2nd toe) with every step. Confident that this was a defect, I went to Brooks for answers. They promptly sent out a replacement paid. The replacement pair immediately had BOTH toe boxes collapse in the exact same manner, this time just by a few steps around the house. The design of the toe box is defective. Brooks has not indicated they have any intentions of correcting this, nor have they admitted it is a flawed design at this time. Very disappointed with this shoe.

Comments about PureConnect 4:

This is my 6th pair of PureConnects going back to the original offerings and I usually put 3-400 miles per pair sometimes more. I put just under 300 miles on my last pair of PureConnect4 which were purchased in December 2014 and wore a hole in the toe (top of the shoe not the sole). It's not a problem I've had with any other version and I'm still wearing my initial PureConnects as everyday shoes with no holes.

The fabric on the 4 seems to be too thin in the toe area or lacks additional reinforcement on the inside. Just under a hundred miles in this current pair and unfortunately I already see similar wear so it's a little disappointing. I had to reinforce it with duct tape on the inside to try and prevent a hole form appearing (No I don't have toe claws in case anyone was wondering). Aside from that, the shoe is great, very light, feels like a slipper and is very reminiscent of the original PureConnects which were my favorite.

      Comments about PureConnect 4:

I've been an avid fan of the Pure series since the first Connect came out. The first two years of the Connects were stellar. Five star shoes in my opinion. The newest version is still great (four stars) but not as good as the original. They just feel different - perhaps bulkier? I miss feeling the road! Yes - four stars are still good..but Brooks had perfection going in my opinion with the original version. I'm still going to keep these shoes in rotation as they fit me like a glove.

I wanted to love this shoe but just couldn't get past the "pods" on the sole creating pressure points on the bottom of my foot. The shoe is very light weight and I liked the minimal drop but it wasn't meant to be so sadly, I returned them (Free Return is a whole separate issue).
