DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

I am a 6'1", 225lb United States Marine. I am no stranger to distance running and currently reside in Michigan where cold winters and rainy weather are nothing unusual. First purchased this shoe to help protect against the muddy roads I run on, and loved it. I now only wear Brooks Adrenaline for road work and the GTX for inclement weather. The ride in the GTX is a little stiffer than the regular Adrenaline, and the comment about the shoe running hot is true. Gortex, while breathable, is a layer between you and the rest of the shoe, and you will trap some heat. Definitely not a deal-breaker, though. Great stability, straight out of the box for 3 miles and wasn't even aware I had on a new shoe. Brooks quality all over this one. If you want a great trail shoe and you run in wet or cold conditions, hard to do better than the GTX.

I ordered online and the shoes felt a little tight out of the box, but I was hoping it would break in after a few weeks. Still a little uncomfortable and I would have gone with a wider shoe if I tried them on in-store first. I've used them on hikes and trail runs and they seem like they'll hold up for the most part, but one of the green tread pieces on the sole is coming unglued already.

I use these for trail running and they are great! I log 30-40 miles/week and love these shoes. They provide good traction and really are waterproof. Feey stay dry in wet grass, mud and streams. Can be a little warm when it's 85+ but what shoes aren't when it's that hot.

Comments about Adrenaline ASR 11 GTX:

I have had the product for two weeks. I am very pleased with them, but hoped they would breath more than they do. That being said I feel that they are starting to smell. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? I realise they are Gortex and can be warmer, but from reviews I read most people stated that they have good breathability. Overall I feel like I can take on any trail and enjoy wearing them on a daily basis.

Was happy to get them in the mail delivered to my house. The shoes look great. Put them on and immediately felt a stitch pressing against my inside arch where the tounge sews in. Not real sure about this. It kinda hurts and it hasn't eased up after wear a few times. The toes seems to crunch and pop due to the weather proof lining I'm guessing. I need a durable trail shoe but I also want the comfort that Brooks usually provides. Wish I'd kept the box!!

I used to always have to dry my other brooks after my trail runs with my Boxer pup. The gortex liner is worth the extra money if you do any wet hiking or trail runs! My feet stayed dry and warm on the last 5 trial runs out here in the PNW. The tread is spectacular and I never slipped once during down hill runs over mud, rocks, and streams. I will always run in these!
