I'm a gastric bypass patient. 2 years post-surgery. My first 90 pounds came off pretty quick thanks to the surgery but I never reached my goal of 110 pounds so I took up running a year ago and real serious in the last 6 months. Running has allowed me to lose an additional 25 pounds in the last 3 months. When I got serious about my running I went to a local running store (Rush Running) and got a pair of Brooks Ghost 6. I had been running with Nike Air 4.0 off the shelf (Terrible). What a difference. Amazing! So when I started looking for new running shorts I stuck with Brooks. I now have 4 pair and they are perfect. The 3.5 shorts are too short for me and I hate the 7 inchers at my knees. 5 Inch length for me. I have tried the 2 in 1 shorts and I'm not a fan of any brand. Brooks are lightweight, true to size and very comfy. The latest I ordered on sale. I would order Brooks no matter the price but a bargain was nice.

I use these type of shorts for casual running and training. At first glance I like the look and feel of the shorts for warm weather running, but there is one feature that I didn't notice until the shorts got wet. At that point, the material used for the liner causes considerable chafing... Normal sweating caused some minor chafing after ~8 miles, and running in the rain will cause the liner to start chafing almost immediately. I'd compare the feeling to running with sandpaper in my shorts. I'll continue to use them, but only for short distances on non-humid/cooler days.

Comments about 5" Essential Run Short:

I absolutely love my Brooks pants, they're a workhorse for me in the fall and winter, so I decided to expand and try their shorts out. I measured the inseam of my Nike shorts at 5" and bought the corresponding 5" Brooks shorts. When they arrived, however, they settle about 2-3 inches higher than my Nike shorts (which fall just above my knees).

In hindsight, I guess total length would be a very helpful measurement for the website description? They offer free returns, which is nice, but I'm keeping them for comfortable race shorts (and to get some sun above my knees).

Love the rear pocket, easy to use.

I have a few pairs and I love these shorts. But many styles (colors) I want aren't available in my size (Medium) and haven't been for some time. Not sure why.
