DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

I bought Ravenna 5 in purple and I love it! As someone who goes with the best shoe regardless of appearance, it is exciting to get the "cuteness factor" to boot! I used to have many foot and lower leg problems, but I haven't had any running related injuries while wearing the Ravenna (3 years). I am a long distance runner and I believe having the right shoe is absolutely necessary for bio-mechanics and injury prevention.

I bought these late last season, when I was coping with post-tib tendonitis. My other two pairs of shoes had a lot of miles on them, and I wanted a shoe with cushion and support, thinking it would help mitigate the strain on my tendon. Purple is my very most favorite color on the planet, so I was pretty stoked that the shoe that seemed to fit the bill would coordinate with the rest of my running wardrobe.

They played nicely with my orthotics, which I was glad about, because Brooks's sockliners tend to hit my arch in a weird/uncomfortable spot.

As cushy and stable as the ride was, though, I found that I didn't feel the ground as much as I prefer to. I also felt like my feet weren't able to go through the full excursion of movement very efficiently, which is sub-optimal when you already have diminished subtalar mobility. Despite the fact that they are lighter (objectively) than both of my other shoes, they felt heavier and more cumbersome. It felt like I lost momentum with every step and fatigued faster on otherwise comfortable distances.

I will enjoy the comfort, cushion and support of these at my active, on-my-feet job, and anytime when I anticipate I'll be doing a lot of walking.

      Comments about Ravenna 5:

I got fitted for the Ravenna several years ago, and they are all I buy now. I tried numerous running shoes prior, but the Ravenna fit the best, and I get the most out of them. I try to change my shoes every 300-400 miles (approx. 3-4 months), and while others wear on the earlier side, it seems like these hold up longer. I wear them mostly on the road but some trails and through a lot of rain and some snow and I have no complaints. Sometimes the color options are a bit flashy for me - it seems like that's the orientation of running shoes now - but, I always find a color that works. I strongly encourage all runners to be fitted first to figure out the best shoe, and if the Ravenna is recommended by the fitter, go for it!

        Comments about Ravenna 5:

I work at a hospital, so I'm on my feet all day. These shoes have been very comfortable so far for walking/standing/climbing stairs. The heel is a little more narrow than other shoes I've worn, but I think it's better that way. They are also nice and wide in the toe box, so I never feel my toes rubbing on the sides. Overall, I love how Brooks fit my feet, and will probably buy another pair when these run out.

        Calf Cramping!!?

        Comments about Ravenna 5:

I use these shoes for running. My biggest complaint about this shoe is the calf/achilles tightness/cramping it causes. I had the Ravenna 3 model for years and had only a very mild issue with this (the running store I bought them from said this was normal for this shoe). I am curious as to what aspect of the new model is causing this change? I will try them out a few more times, but I may have to send them back. My calves/achilles feel like they are dead weight after just a few miles!
