DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

I workout on average 6 days a week. Brooks were recommended by our local endurance shop due to my pronation (knees turn in) bi tried other brands, but feel I love with Brooks for arch support, comfort, and of course looks.
I now discovered the direct order verses driving an hour in hopes to find my size, color etc. I love the free shipping, cost and no hassle return just adds more value to my Brooks and me as a customer.
I also like that I can use my Brooks for gym workouts. They absorb impact well and maintain traction for other training.
I am tempted to stock up so I have my next pair ready...I have already logged 100+ miles on my new purchase.

I bought these late last season, when I was coping with post-tib tendonitis. My other two pairs of shoes had a lot of miles on them, and I wanted a shoe with cushion and support, thinking it would help mitigate the strain on my tendon. Purple is my very most favorite color on the planet, so I was pretty stoked that the shoe that seemed to fit the bill would coordinate with the rest of my running wardrobe.

They played nicely with my orthotics, which I was glad about, because Brooks's sockliners tend to hit my arch in a weird/uncomfortable spot.

As cushy and stable as the ride was, though, I found that I didn't feel the ground as much as I prefer to. I also felt like my feet weren't able to go through the full excursion of movement very efficiently, which is sub-optimal when you already have diminished subtalar mobility. Despite the fact that they are lighter (objectively) than both of my other shoes, they felt heavier and more cumbersome. It felt like I lost momentum with every step and fatigued faster on otherwise comfortable distances.

I will enjoy the comfort, cushion and support of these at my active, on-my-feet job, and anytime when I anticipate I'll be doing a lot of walking.

    Comments about Ravenna 5:

I got my first Ravenna 5's in January 2014, replacing a pair of Ravenna 4's. I liked the 5's so much that I got two more pairs in different colors and wear them all the time; they are the only shoes I wear. I am not a runner and I have hip and knee problems and find that the Ravenna 5's are the only shoes that do not hurt my knees and hips while providing the stability and cushioning I need. They work well with my orthotics, too.
When the 5's were discontinued and replaced with the 6's, I tried on the 6's and found that they do not have enough room over the toe and do not have the glove-like fit of the 5's. So I did an internet search and bought four more pairs of 5's as backup for when the four pairs that I am wearing wear out.
The Ravenna 5 is the best and most comfortable shoe that I have ever worn. I can only hope that Brooks will get the message and for the next model change, bring back a shoe like the Ravenna 5.

    Comments about Ravenna 5:

I am a casual runner, working my way up the mileage ladder and it's always hard for me ti find shoes that support my arches enough. I have a tendon injury in my foot and even though I have normal arches, I need extra support because of my injury. These are fantastic! They give just enough support while also allowing the muscles around my tendon to strenthen. I think this is the perfect balance! My only complaint is that after 2 runs, the fabric is bowing out past the sole of the shoe on the sides. I've always had normal width shoes and that's never happened before. I'd get a wider one if I wanted to return them.

And the color is awesome girly enough but not too much!!

I love this brand! I bought my first pair a few years ago and fell in love. I bought my second pair in November, and was disappointed after about two months of wearing them. The side where my 'baby' toe is on each foot, started to breakdown, and shortly after a hole developed. Great sneakers overall, just the material breaks down quickly.

Bought these to replace my Ravenna 4's as they had many many miles on them. They are just as comfortable and light as the Ravenna 4, and the cushion in the heel feels GREAT! I use these to run on the road, and will be wearing them for my half marathon in May. Didn't even have to break them in! Put them on and ran 4 miles with no problems.
