DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

I bought Ravenna 5 in purple and I love it! As someone who goes with the best shoe regardless of appearance, it is exciting to get the "cuteness factor" to boot! I used to have many foot and lower leg problems, but I haven't had any running related injuries while wearing the Ravenna (3 years). I am a long distance runner and I believe having the right shoe is absolutely necessary for bio-mechanics and injury prevention.

    Comments about Ravenna 5:

I bought these to replace my Ravenna 4 which have served me well. Knew it was time for a new pair when my right knee and hip started bothering me.

The new pair are very comfortable. I just wish the shoe laces were as long as on my first pair as it makes it more challenging to tie.

    Comments about Ravenna 5:

I do primarily high intensity interval workouts, and when I got my Ravenna 4's, I thought I had found the shoe for me. When I had to replace them, however, I could not find the 4's in my size and went for the 5's. I am very disappointed. The arch support is uncomfortable, the cushioning poor, and the lateral support inadequate. Give me back my 4's!

      Comments about Ravenna 5:

Love these shoes but unfortuneately the regular width is too narrow for me, will have to reorder in a wide, my major disappointment with most brands including Brooks is that they think women with wide feet don't like pretty colors? At least give us at least one pretty color in wide, we don't all like gray just because we have wide feet. I originally ordered the purple ones and they are so pretty, I'm bummed I have to trade in for gray.

        Comments about Ravenna 5:

I use these shoes to run on pavement and trails. These shoes just melt on my feet and conform so well that I forget I have shoes on while I am running. I first got the Ravenna 4 at a local store and feel in love with them so much that I wore them all the time, so I figured it was time to get a pair of shoes just for running and I was pointed to these after trying Brooks Shoe Advisor. These are not good for running on trails after or during a rain as they let in a lot of water but that is the only con I have so fat. I They breathe very well, I never have sweaty feet no matter what the temp is outside. They are overall a great shoe and will continue to purchase them as long as they are made. Thank you Brooks for making a great shoe!

          Comments about Ravenna 5:

I'm new to running, and the other shoes I had were cheapo ones until I realized that I love to run and needed a good shoe. I was fitted for a few shoes and ended up with this. So comfortable, and it certainly doesn't hurt that the pink and grey is cute. I've run about 100 miles on them on roads or sidewalk like tracks, and they're still comfortable. They hug the back of my ankle and help me feel supported. I have an insert in them because I have a bad knee, but even before that they were comfortable. I just needed a little more support.
