DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Nightlife

What is it?

We combined our experience in retroreflective, fluorescence and contrast with new research findings on eye function, cognitive science and direction perception, shifting the conversation from one about "visibility" to one about "recognition".

By doing so, we were able to strategically rearrange these technologies to create a silhouette of a runner in motion. This helps ensure the brain recognizes what it’s seeing as a person and not a static object – like a traffic cone.

How does it work?

While some reflective running gear focuses on visibility, recognition is the key to Nightlife products. While Nightlife products do make a runner visible in all lighting conditions, they also ensure runners are recognized as humans in motion.

Brooks was one of the first technical brands to offer runners a high-visibility collection that helped keep them safe while running in low light and nighttime conditions. The focus was on:

  • Fluorescent Colors: Fluorescent colors reflect or absorb colors in the visible spectrum, but that extra glow in fluorescent colors comes from ultraviolet light, which humans don’t see. Ultraviolet light, or UV, is just beyond visible violet in the spectrum. Fluorescent dyes turn invisible energy into visible light, making them visible to the human eye.
  • Retroreflectivity: A retroreflective is a device or surface that reflects light back with minimum scattering of light, directly impacting the distance at which the device or surface can be seen.

I bought my first pair of ST5's for short races when I was used to bulkier shoes, compared to which they seem like racing flats. When I moved to real racing flats, the ST5's became my speed workout shoes. Later still I started using them primarily for tempo runs. Now I'm on my second pair and use them for tempos and longer races (20k to marathon). I normally prefer a lower heel drop, but I appreciate the bigger heel when running faster and the extra support (without extra weight) in later miles. In my opinion these are superior to the Pure Flows, which feel clunkier at tempo pace. I often use Pure Flow's for slower, easy running because of the lower heel and reserve my ST5's for faster stuff.

Walking around my office, they were comfortable.
First jog, they were light as a feather and great.
Second jog, my arches didn't seem like they were getting support.
Third jog, I had to quit half a mile in and walk back to the truck with my arches in pain, to put on my old Asics to complete my 3 miles.

      Comments about Racer ST 5:

I usually wear Brooks Ravenna but wanted a lighter shoe for 5 & 10Ks. Concerned that a Unisex shoe was going to be too wide, but no problems. Felt great during recent 5K.

I've owned 9-10 pairs of these now, I use them as my primary training shoe and racing (running races and triathlon). Raced in everything from a 5k to an Ironman in them. They are nice and light, but have enough to them to train in them every day. They don't last forever, but have a decent length of life.

Used to run Adrenaline GTS but after the 12's the subsequent ones made didn't work for me. Moved on to Ravennas. A passable alternative but missing the mark a little. Discovered the Racers middle of my marathon training and was really impressed that a lightweight shoe could feel so good! Did a 20 miler in them and a couple of 6 milers. The shoe performed well. Felt like I had wings on my shoes! These are more minimalistic than I am used to but they have decent cushion. Less so in the forefoot area which may be ok-- will have to continue to test them to know if it will be a good long term shoe.

                      Comments about Racer ST 5:

I am a former D1 (University of Louisville) runner and have run in many shoes over my life time. I currently still compete in races from 1 mile to marathon and I'm currently training for my 1st 100 miler. I have used these shoes over the past 3 all most 4 years (14+ pairs)and use them from speed work, endurance, and races and have enjoyed them on each type of run.
The shoe is light enough to make me feel like I'm still young and in racing flats while still offering the support of a trainer. The shoe is responsive and helps to keep my legs feeling fresh.
The only things that I could point out that aren't great are the lack of traction in inclement weather and the toe box is a big wide for my foot.
I often read reviews and wonder if the reviewer relates to me as I am a very serious runner and I don't know this reviewer, so here is what I run to help you know if the shoe will work for you:
                      PRs: Mile (1600)- 3:58 (1996); 5K 13:54(1999); 10K 30:36 (1996); 15K 44:21 (1989); 13.1 1:08:02 (2000); 26.2 2:32:12 (2013)
I train 50-120 miles a week although it's going to go up with training for the 100 miler. I do at least two speed/interval workouts a week and run a minimum of 5 days a week averaging 6/week. My long runs have been up to 22 miles until recently when a I ran a 30 miler. Now that I'm older I average around 6:15/mile. I really hope this helps anyone interested in this shoe.

This is the second pair of these shoes that I have owned and I love them. They are perfect for racing flats, tempo runs, or track workouts. I have flat feet but these shoes provide enough support for runs where I want to feel lighter on my feet. I would recommend these shoes to anyone looking for a moderate support, light, and responsive shoe.

                            Comments about Racer ST 5:

The shoes arrived on-time and are a lot lighter than I thought. So far I have ran three 5Ks in them and the are great!
