DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).
  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Nightlife

What is it?

We combined our experience in retroreflective, fluorescence and contrast with new research findings on eye function, cognitive science and direction perception, shifting the conversation from one about "visibility" to one about "recognition".

By doing so, we were able to strategically rearrange these technologies to create a silhouette of a runner in motion. This helps ensure the brain recognizes what it’s seeing as a person and not a static object – like a traffic cone.

How does it work?

While some reflective running gear focuses on visibility, recognition is the key to Nightlife products. While Nightlife products do make a runner visible in all lighting conditions, they also ensure runners are recognized as humans in motion.

Brooks was one of the first technical brands to offer runners a high-visibility collection that helped keep them safe while running in low light and nighttime conditions. The focus was on:

  • Fluorescent Colors: Fluorescent colors reflect or absorb colors in the visible spectrum, but that extra glow in fluorescent colors comes from ultraviolet light, which humans don’t see. Ultraviolet light, or UV, is just beyond visible violet in the spectrum. Fluorescent dyes turn invisible energy into visible light, making them visible to the human eye.
  • Retroreflectivity: A retroreflective is a device or surface that reflects light back with minimum scattering of light, directly impacting the distance at which the device or surface can be seen.

I am a former D1 (University of Louisville) runner and have run in many shoes over my life time. I currently still compete in races from 1 mile to marathon and I'm currently training for my 1st 100 miler. I have used these shoes over the past 3 all most 4 years (14+ pairs)and use them from speed work, endurance, and races and have enjoyed them on each type of run.
The shoe is light enough to make me feel like I'm still young and in racing flats while still offering the support of a trainer. The shoe is responsive and helps to keep my legs feeling fresh.
The only things that I could point out that aren't great are the lack of traction in inclement weather and the toe box is a big wide for my foot.
I often read reviews and wonder if the reviewer relates to me as I am a very serious runner and I don't know this reviewer, so here is what I run to help you know if the shoe will work for you:
PRs: Mile (1600)- 3:58 (1996); 5K 13:54(1999); 10K 30:36 (1996); 15K 44:21 (1989); 13.1 1:08:02 (2000); 26.2 2:32:12 (2013)
I train 50-120 miles a week although it's going to go up with training for the 100 miler. I do at least two speed/interval workouts a week and run a minimum of 5 days a week averaging 6/week. My long runs have been up to 22 miles until recently when a I ran a 30 miler. Now that I'm older I average around 6:15/mile. I really hope this helps anyone interested in this shoe.

Walking around my office, they were comfortable.
First jog, they were light as a feather and great.
Second jog, my arches didn't seem like they were getting support.
Third jog, I had to quit half a mile in and walk back to the truck with my arches in pain, to put on my old Asics to complete my 3 miles.

        Comments about Racer ST 5:

I love the lightweight, snug fit. These shoes feel great through the opening miles of a run. My ankles become sore (medial side)if I wear these shoes on runs longer than 5 miles. However, I know of others who have less of this issue; in fact, they find the Adrenalines to be more of a problem for making sore arches.

              Comments about Racer ST 5:

I have been running in the Ghost for two years now and this was my first experience with lighter-weight racers. I picked these because I felt like I needed a bit of pronation control. I now have over 70 miles on them and think they are great. I run on roads (paved and dirt) as well as crushed stone bike paths and they perform well on all the surfaces. There is enough cushion to hold up for at least 10-mile runs. The flexibility of the shoe gives it a sock-like feel and the lighter weight is noticeable. The only drawback is a product of what I like about the shoes so much, on sharp declines it feels like my foot slides forward a bit in the shoe because the body is so flexible, but it isn't a big enough issue to detract from the overall experience.

Used these for a 10k race with good success. The shoe runs long though, if you usually go up a 1/2 size no need to do so with this shoe. I went with 9 and a half and a 9 would have been better.
