Additional Information

Embrace lightweight without losing cushion in the get-up-and-go PureFlow 3. We've fine-tuned features like a more rounded heel, sculpted the medial side while integrating a wider Nav Band, and repositioned the Toe Flex to better align your stride. So all you feel is that sweet cushion, and all you need is the open road.

We’re not the only people going with the Flow: Runner’s World Magazine named the PureFlow 3 its "Best Update" in their March 2014 issue. The editors praised new design for its smoother landing, more flexibility in the forefoot, and improved fit; calling the PureFlow 3 "a bargain-priced trainer that handles a lot of miles."

Just like our core line, we hold PureProject to the industry’s highest weartest and durability standards. Because of their lightweight construction and fewer materials, runners should generally expect shoes from the PureProject line to last approximately 250-300 miles.

DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Rounded Heel

What is it?

“Rounded Heel” is just a fancy name that we like to use for the rounded and reduced heel on our shoes. The slight curvature in the heel vastly improves the alignment of your body, encouraging a more efficient stride.

How does it work?

It’s really quite simple. The curvature in the heel works to align the body by shifting the contact point forward. As you hit the ground there is a greater clearance distance under the middle of your heel, which aligns force through the center of your ankle, thus reducing internal stress on your body.

The new PureFlow 3's are awesome. I loved the PureFlow 1's and not a fan at all of the PureFlow 2's, in fact I gave my 2's away after several uses. The new PureFlow 3's are great. I use them for running and CrossFit on the days i'm either running or doing box jumps. They are very comfortable and the Black/Red colorway looks much nicer than in the photo's.
Anyone who loved the PureFlow 1's i would suggest to pick up a pair of the new 3's because this is an upgrade to the 1's and you will be very happy with them. I just hope they come out with some other (bright) colorways this year so I can have a variety when my current pair wears out. Not a fan of the blue and all black. Brooks, I loved the original men's blue on the PF 1's, they rocked and i got tons of compliments and the original greens were pretty awesome as well.
Great shoe, if you hit the gym, run, into triathalons or CrossFit i suggest you pick up a pair of these shoes I promise you won't be disappointed!

The changes in the upper from the PureFlow 2 to the PureFlow 3 are much more significant than other reviews led me to believe. I've now run twice in the 3's (6 miles and 9 miles) and fear I've lost my favorite shoe. The upper is too narrow, too constricting, and the outsides of my ankles rub on the shoe.

The PureFlow 1 and 2 were my favorite shoes ever. I went through six pairs. I loved the weight, the cushioning, and the fit. I was never injured and they always felt great--whether I ran 15 miles a week or 35.

The 3s have now changed in ways that don't work for my foot. First, the upper is too narrow. On my first run, my feet starting falling asleep a mile into the run. I loosened the laces as much as I could, but the nav band and the upper-most lace still felt too tight (and I've run out of lace). Second, the outside of my ankle rubs on either the ankle-pocket or the wrap-around tongue (I suspect it's the ankle-pocket, but it's hard to see that while running).

During my 9 mile run today, my feet never fell asleep, but the upper still feels too tight. I don't believe I need a larger size since I have a full thumb-width between my big toe and the end of the toe-box. Throughout my run I played with the laces and tongue, but I couldn't eliminate the ankle-rub, and the uper-most lace always felt too tight across my tendons.

The cushioning in the 3 feel great--as good as ever. But the upper is a deal-breaker for me.

I guess I'll stock up on left-over 2s and hope Brooks quickly makes minor changes to make the upper a little more like the old shoes.

    Comments about PureFlow 3:

I use this product for indoor track. It has improved my speed and my approach for my long jump, and also my distance. The shoes are lightweight and fit perfectly. I do not have any cons at this time. I hope they wear for I do a lot of jumping; other shoes have come apart where the fabric meets the sole.

      Swiched from Minimalist shoe

        Comments about PureFlow 3:

After switching to forefoot running and New Balance minimus running shoes a few years ago (yes, after reading Born To Run), I was able (I thought) to pretty much wear my minimalist running shoes until they fell apart. I didn't realize how uneven the inside forefoot area had worn under the ball of my foot (it was like a small thumb size area had been whittled away).

Upon discovery and some concern (didn't want to hurt my foot on a 26 mile long run training for a marathon), I went on-line at Runners Word and used their Shoe Finder to pick a new minimalist running shoe, but found they don't make nearly as many as they used to. So I took a chance with the Brooks PureFlow 3, as it was recommended by the Shoe Finder for forefoot strikers and it has a 4 mm low drop, but a lot of forefoot cushion. I had used Brooks Ravenna 3s years earlier, before my switch to forefoot striking, and like Brooks' shoes. I also discovered that my true size is exactly a men's USA 11.5, medium width, according to the shoe size gadget at shoe stores, but I had been buying size 12 running shoes (not sure why). I tried by the Men's size USA 11.5 and 12 in PureFlow 3s and although it was surprisingly hard to tell the difference, the 11.5s fit perfectly, and I figured smaller is better if not rubbing. Both sizes actually have quite a bit of room between the big toe and end of the shoe (almost 1/2 inch) when I wear socks and am not warmed up.

I've put about 100 miles on the PureFlow 3s and haven't noticed much wear yet, and love the shoes, so very comfortable, but hold my foot firm, like they are part of my foot. I was initially concerned that forefoot striking with a padded forefoot sole would negatively impact my running form, and/or waste energy (by absorbing but not releasing it back). I haven't found either to be the case. First, with the low 4 mm drop, it's a pretty flat shoe, and second, in reading articles, it seems that padding actually improves running efficiency. It's hard to tell if the padding makes my forefoot strike running less jolting, but it does seem to. I do notice that the more padded forefoot sole prevents the occasional pain I had when hitting small pebbles in my minimalist running shoes on trails, and I don't have a loss of control or feel of the ground, as running on asphalt (as I typically do) doesn't have a lot to feel other than flat ground anyway. I get no squishy feel at all; feels firm.

Bottom line is these are the best running shoes I've had so far. I'm very happy with them and will run them in a marathon next week. By the way, they weigh 10.1 ounces (Men's size USA 11.5, medium width), and feel very light on your feet.

I was using the Pure Cadence for 3 pairs. My store suddenly stopped carrying the Cadence and started carrying the Flow. I like the Pure Flow shoe's but I really don't like how fast they wear out. They wear out in an average of like 250 miles
