Awesome Spike for All Levels of Competition

I race 5Ks on XC courses. Courses range from hard dirt and pavement

I race 5Ks on XC courses. Courses range from hard dirt and pavement stretches to gravel paths and muddy messes, and this spike has handled it all. The midsole has a pretty consistent thickness throughout the forefoot, and it also provides decent arch support with good heel cushioning. The microfiber lining in the heel is nice, but I think it could be even better if it ran the full length of the shoe. The XC season is over, and though it survived, the spike has taken some hits. For one, the glue holding the insole doesn't seem to have held too well; the insole has held to the strobel, but it has slid back in both shoes. It would also be nice if it continued up the medial side to provide more comfort and arch support. The plastic grid under the heel has worn, so it doesn't grip as well (but it gets wet grass stuck in it anyway, so there isn't much traction there anyways). One of the spike wells bent during the final kick over a concrete slab. Another collapsed when I put on 1/2 inch pins. The Pebax plate has worn some, but still grips well. I overpronate some, and this spike could have some better stability; the foam on the medial side has crushed some as a result. I like the heel lock, and the laces are really nice and smooth. They are quite responsive because of the Pebax plate and lightweight; they never feel like they're holding me back. The aggressiveness of the outsole is incredible; during a particularly muddy race where several people around me slid and fell, including a teammate, I stayed up and flew over the mud. In fact, every person on our team that had Mach 18s didn't fall. These spikes are great for any racer, from a beginner to state champion. They can hold up to multiple seasons and are priced great for the quality. Though improvements can always be made, like making the tongue more breathable, this spike nails most points right on. I've been running cross country for 4 years and I always get brooks spikes. They're by far the best and I never have regrets. The only thing different I would like is if the shoe had colors like the 17's but a bottom like the 16's. That would be awesome. Read More

What size and type of spikes do they come with

2016/10/01 E

These come with a pyramid 1/4 inch spike.

I have a pair of the Mach 16 sand Mach 17. What I liked about the Mach 16 is that I could race in them without the spikes if I were running a course with a lot of road running. However, with the Mach 17 Spikes, there was a plastic shell on the bottom of the shoe that kind of work as "built-in" spikes. This means I can't run on roads with them, even without the spikes. Do the Mach 18 have this same plastic shell on the bottom? It appears so. It is a bit upsetting as I love the Mach series and they are amazing, but it just isn't worth buying a "Spikeless" and "Spiked" pair just for a different scenario when it comes to the racing course. Thanks in advance.

It is stated that this shoe is a cross country spike, yet in specifications it says the surface is road and track. Is that a mistake? Usually Cross Country spikes are not worn on roads and tracks but through dirt and grass.
