Ideal Pressure Zones

What is it?

Ideal Pressure Zones distribute pressure evenly under your foot, transforming your run into a more comfortable and effortless ride from heel to forefoot.

How does it work?

When we take a step back to examine how runners run, we recognize that the highest amount of impact happens as you propel yourself forward. Knowing that this is the moment of highest impact, we’ve reshaped the outsole to disperse pressure evenly throughout your whole foot -- from heel to mid-foot to forefoot.

This means that impact is no longer felt in just one area of the foot which could cause “hot spots” (places that rub or cause pain throughout the run) but is instead dispersed evenly across the entire foot, leading to a smoother, float-like transition as you glide through your run.

Ideal Pressure Zones work in conjunction with our other shoe technologies to help runners maintain their most efficient and natural motion throughout the run.

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

Super DNA

What is it?

An adaptable midsole material that combines plushness with adaptability and provides 25% more cushioning than BioMoGo DNA.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Super DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Super DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Super DNA through a microscope, you’d see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further:

  • Super DNA is our latest stop on the DNA journey. Introduced with the Transcend and now found in the Glycerin, Super DNA combines the adaptability of DNA and adds 25% more cushioning than BioMoGo DNA while still maintaining the same energy return and biodegradable properties. Essentially you get the best of both worlds – adaptability and ultimate cushioning.

Other benefits include:

  • Significantly more cushioning than standard midsole materials
  • Increased energy-return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

I have been buying Glycerin shoes for a few years (10 and 11). I typically run between 6-16 miles. I received this model recently and was surprised that the tops my big toes were getting sore at the end of my 8 mile runs. From looking at the fit, it seems like this model (or my particular shoes) are a bit smaller than previous models. Also, I noticed that the material in this model is more rugged, but might make them a bit stiffer (although this does not seem to be a problem).

The new Glycerin 12 design has fallen well below my expectations of Brooks. The width of the heel in this shoe is about 3/4" narrower than any previous Glycerin model. This leads to a lack of support and stability on your heel strike. I wear a 2E and this shoe also feels tighter in the forefoot. I have purchased many Glycerins over the years and have always loved the design, fit, and comfort of them but these shoes are just too uncomfortable to wear. I hope they reference the previous model's design when creating the 13.

    Comments about Glycerin 12:

I have been running on Brooks for around 3 years now doing marathons and half marathons. Most of the time has been on Ghosts 5 & 6, with a recent change to the Glycerin 12 to theoretically provide more cushioning. I had about 350 miles on the Glycerins and developed compressional nerve pain in one foot. I went and purchased another pair thinking they were worn out, but within one more week on the new shoes both feet started having the same problem nerve problems. While I was wanting more cushioning and a softer ride than the Ghosts, instead I found them extremely stiff, board-like and were hurting my feet like a cheap shoe feels after long runs. Since I had been running in Brooks for so long, this really surprised and disappointed me. The "New Super DNA" is not working at all and is a huge step backward. Brooks is believing its own marketing on this Super DNA, but it is anything but "a cloud Feel". It is harsh, board like and injured my feet. The new shoe sole material is terrible and needs to be corrected before I will think about coming back to Brooks. I took the shoes back for a full refund and switched to Asics Gel Nimbus 16. These are the type of gel cushioning that I was expecting out of the Glycerin, but there is a night and day difference. Brooks you must correct this New Super DNA or you will destroy your running shoes and runners who previously supported and ran in your shoes. Do not expand this into other shoes, but take it away. I do not say this with sour grapes, but that I wish my love for Brooks was continuing, but something will need to change before I come back.

      Comments about Glycerin 12:

These really are a step backwards from the 11. They are lighter, which is nice, but the BioMoGoDNA stuff does not deliver at all. The old MoGoDNA Gel is waaay better. The new 12s are very stiff. The foam that is used is very firm and does not provide the nice cushy ride that the 11s had. The shoe itself also feels more stiff. when you bend the shoe or run uphill, they are much less responsive. The 12s honestly don't feel all that much better than my Marine combat boots. They feel that stiff. I burnt out 2 pairs of 11s, putting over 350 miles on both pairs. I am sad that the 11s are gone. The 12s just arent as good.

        Comments about Glycerin 12:

I burnt out two pairs of 11s. I loved them. I couldn't find anything wrong. The 12s aren't a bad shoe, but they did not deliver what they said they would. They are not as cushioned as the 11s. This was one of the big "improvements" that was supposed to have been made. More cushion. But there's less. The whole shoe feels stiff and unresponsive. I find that when I go out fresh, after taking a day off, the shoes feel really good. But if I put up two or three hard runs in a row, my legs are exhausted. the show is lighter, and is very comfortable to wear. But after a while, it's like the cushioning goes away. It's like the cushion has to recharge. I was disappointed. I usually run around 40 miles per week.
        * as a side note, many have said the shoes are better for heavier runners. I weigh about 150 pounds. Maybe I'm just not heavy enough to really break in the cushion?

          Comments about Glycerin 12:

Brooks, please bring back the DNA gel used in previous Glycerin models. The gel makes a huge difference in 'mushiness' feel while staying comfortable and plush on longer runs. The new Super DNA is just not the same and makes this shoe less desirable than the 9's 10's and 11's....
