Ideal Pressure Zones

What is it?

Ideal Pressure Zones distribute pressure evenly under your foot, transforming your run into a more comfortable and effortless ride from heel to forefoot.

How does it work?

When we take a step back to examine how runners run, we recognize that the highest amount of impact happens as you propel yourself forward. Knowing that this is the moment of highest impact, we’ve reshaped the outsole to disperse pressure evenly throughout your whole foot -- from heel to mid-foot to forefoot.

This means that impact is no longer felt in just one area of the foot which could cause “hot spots” (places that rub or cause pain throughout the run) but is instead dispersed evenly across the entire foot, leading to a smoother, float-like transition as you glide through your run.

Ideal Pressure Zones work in conjunction with our other shoe technologies to help runners maintain their most efficient and natural motion throughout the run.

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

Super DNA

What is it?

An adaptable midsole material that combines plushness with adaptability and provides 25% more cushioning than BioMoGo DNA.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Super DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Super DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Super DNA through a microscope, you’d see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further:

  • Super DNA is our latest stop on the DNA journey. Introduced with the Transcend and now found in the Glycerin, Super DNA combines the adaptability of DNA and adds 25% more cushioning than BioMoGo DNA while still maintaining the same energy return and biodegradable properties. Essentially you get the best of both worlds – adaptability and ultimate cushioning.

Other benefits include:

  • Significantly more cushioning than standard midsole materials
  • Increased energy-return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

My first pair of Brooks was the Transcend....which was also my first entry into running...I had nerve damage in my foot and the Doctor suggested I go with a high cushioned running shoe. Well my nerve damage is better and the Transcend was just too much cushioning.....so I went to a Running store that specialized in Brooks and after some time in the store they recommended the Glycerine 12 - I have put about 20 miles on them thus far and I am in love!

I have been running on Brooks for around 3 years now doing marathons and half marathons. Most of the time has been on Ghosts 5 & 6, with a recent change to the Glycerin 12 to theoretically provide more cushioning. I had about 350 miles on the Glycerins and developed compressional nerve pain in one foot. I went and purchased another pair thinking they were worn out, but within one more week on the new shoes both feet started having the same problem nerve problems. While I was wanting more cushioning and a softer ride than the Ghosts, instead I found them extremely stiff, board-like and were hurting my feet like a cheap shoe feels after long runs. Since I had been running in Brooks for so long, this really surprised and disappointed me. The "New Super DNA" is not working at all and is a huge step backward. Brooks is believing its own marketing on this Super DNA, but it is anything but "a cloud Feel". It is harsh, board like and injured my feet. The new shoe sole material is terrible and needs to be corrected before I will think about coming back to Brooks. I took the shoes back for a full refund and switched to Asics Gel Nimbus 16. These are the type of gel cushioning that I was expecting out of the Glycerin, but there is a night and day difference. Brooks you must correct this New Super DNA or you will destroy your running shoes and runners who previously supported and ran in your shoes. Do not expand this into other shoes, but take it away. I do not say this with sour grapes, but that I wish my love for Brooks was continuing, but something will need to change before I come back.

Comments about Glycerin 12:

I went to my local running shoe store and not loyal to any brand tried on a half dozen shoes picking the Glycerin 12's. They felt great in the store but one shoe began to give me a bit of a hot spot after a few miles. I exchanged for a new pair an they felt ok, but I just didn't get that "can't even tell they are there" feeling like I expected. Wore them for my first half marathon and while I can't say the shoe gave me any problems; no blisters, rubs nor it did the shoe slow my time down!!!, I have to agree I wouldn't mind a softer feel to my shoe. Reading other reviews I am really curious now how the older styles feel prior to this new DNA cushioning. Overall, it's a great shoe that still looks good after some miles on it, but maybe not the softest shoe you could get.

Comments about Glycerin 12:

I have back problems and decided to try this shoe. It is light weight and very comfortable. No issues so far, great for walking and running. But after 4 months there is a hole on the right side where my right little toe is. Very disappointing. Hopefully Brooks will provide me a new pair!!??

    Comments about Glycerin 12:

While I appreciate Brook's effort to be innovative and give us runners an excellent product I have to agree with other reviews that the Super DNA sole is a step backwards. After several runs in the new Glycerin I'm disappointed. It feels to me like you are running on a hard rubber ball. I much prefer the ride of the Glycerin 9. While the upper is good, the sole needs work. I do hope Brook's considers going back to the gel inserts, they felt much better. I also ran in the new Ghost 7 and it also felt like I was running on a hard rubber ball.

      Comments about Glycerin 12:

I can't speak for the runners, but as a "speed" walker this shoe is the best I have ever worn. I started a new eating plan (DASH) and exercising (walking & resistance training) in July 2013 at 50 years old with a goal of losing 143 lbs. without surgery (height 5'9", 328 lbs.). After losing 80 lbs. using several top quality brands and models, the glycerins (10-12)are the shining jewels. There wasn't another shoe that came close to them. Thank you so much! Not sure I would have made it without the Glycerin model.

New Super DNA not the best

      Comments about Glycerin 12:

I appreciate Brook's effort in trying to be innovative and produce an outstanding running shoe, but the new super DNA just doesn't seem to be the trick. After running in the Glycerin 12 several time my conclusion is that it feels like you are running on a hard rubber ball. Many other aspects of the shoe are excellent, but the sole needs work. The Glycerin 9 was far better. Hope Brook's returns back to the gel.
