DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).

  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

I am a beginner runner, who is currently running 3 days a week, 1-2 miles each time. I walked into my local running store without a CLUE what shoe would be best for me (again, Newbie here ;) ) Anyway, the man working the counter checked out my old shoes, and evaluated my walking. He told me I have low arches, but no pronation. So he whipped out these shoes, and three other pairs from various companies. I tried them all on, and walked around with them, but I could feel an immediate difference with these. Comfortable, supportive, and they just felt like they were MADE for my feet.

I walked in them a few days, and then joined a local running program. About halfway into our run, I noticed my arches, particularly my right one, were sore. One of the coaches suggested an insert, but I am not entirely convinced I need one yet. I do believe the pain could stem from the fact that I have not run since high school, where we were forced to run a mile. I am not blaming the shoes at this point in time, but Im not going to rule it out entirely either.

One thing that I would have liked, and this is entirely cosmetic, it does not alter my opinion on the performance of these shoes, is more color options. To be honest, Im not digging Navy, and Im not a fan of the magenta detail either. It would have been nice to have more options. Just saying :)

Bought them in November 2014. I find them very comfortable, I work 12 hour shifts 3 days a week. After about 2 months noticed holes in the mesh were my toes are. I have bought all types of sneakers and have never had this problem. I only were them for work. Disappointed.

Had foot and ankle surgery this year and needed new shoes that give stability with cushioning. These shoes do just that! Have enough room for my custom orthotic too.

    Don't Like the 8

    By

    from Durham, NC

    Comments about Dyad 8:

I have been wearing Dyads for about 5 years. Buy a new pair every year. The 8's are not working for me. I have adored this shoe up until now. The shoe feels stiff when walking and floppy on my foot. The heel is too puffy and slick. I have always loved this shoe from the minute I put it on. Now I feel stuck with this pair and need to start over. As an aside, the trim and color of the shoe this year make me feel like I have on an old fashioned saddle shoe. And it feels like one too. Please bring back the old Dyad!

      1. PLEASE, Brooks, give us fun colors!
      2. for the 8's: These have been more of a breaking in period than previous versions of the Dyad, I'm not really certain what changes were made, but I kind of miss the old ones. I've only used Dyads since maybe version 3, and they all seemed to fit and feel great right away. These ones seem to be a slightly different shape or something, I can't put my finger (or foot?) on it? Anyways, all the previous dyads have gotten me through 40+mile weeks injury free, so I will be sticking with them, but hopefully the bugs get worked out for the next version

      Comments about Dyad 8:

This shoe fits great and feels good when I am on my long distance walks. However, after only 6 or 8 walks the insole fabric is pilling and the little bumps are felt on the ball of my foot. I had to change the insole. Brooks sent me replacement liners that did not fit. They said they were out of my size. I am using other liners until they get my size back in stock. I am dissappointed in the fabric of the insole. I dont know if I will re-order these when the time comes for a new pair. I walk an average of 20 to 25 miles a week. I've had other brands that lasted much longer.

I use orthotic insoles to provide more cushioning because I am prone to torn ligaments. If the shoes came with a more cushioned insole it would quite possibly eliminate my usage of orthotics.

          Comments about Dyad 8:

I bought many pairs of the Dyad 7 and was very disappointed in this update. The heel is squishable - as in I have to put a finger against the heel to hold it upright to put my foot in, otherwise the heel has lumps. And yes, I always untie my laces and stretch out the shoe to put my foot in - the heel just is not sturdy.

The interior of the heel is a smooth fabric (the Dyad 7 had a more textured fabric). The fabric has eaten my socks because my foot loves to slide in and out. There are rolls of sock in the back of the shoe that i occasionally pick off.

I also for the first time in my memory have an issue with smelly shoes - I try everything and they still give off a stink. Maybe it's me and my feet, but I don't think I've changed anything.

I had to order a half size larger in these shoes compared to my Dyad 7s but my heels slide out worse than they did.

At this point I will look for a replacement shoe rather than purchase another Dyad, which is unfortunate because they were great for my plantar fasciitis for a few years.
