The overall function of the shoe is great. I have been wearing them for ten years. I have tried other motion control shoes, being swayed by saving a few bucks and color choices, but have always come back. I do hate they are most expensive shoe on the market. They don't seem to be competitively priced. If the price is the price, you'd think there would be fun color choices, especially since other Brooks shoes comes in these fun colors and competitors also have these fun colors. Why does this shoe need to remain in the dark ages of looking more like an orthopedic shoe?

I have been wearing the ariel for several years, I have always worn 8.5 wide because of braces for my feet and ankles. The new ariel 12 has a more pointed toe, thus making the toe box more narrow, and the entire shoe is more narrow. Why do you change the shoe when people that order this shoe has some kind of issue anyway, and this kind of change only adds to the frustration? I do not have time to keep exchanging shoes, and dealing with the hassle.
"If it ain't broke don't try to fix it".
I also have a squeak in the left shoe. at the price they should not do that.
Frustrated! Sending the shoes back.

Love the evolution of this shoe

By Krunner83

from Providence, RI

About Me Gym Rat

Pros

  • Cushions Impact
  • Durable
  • Good Arch Support
  • Good Breathability
  • Pronation Control

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Not As Responsive

Best Uses

  • Dry Weather
  • Endurance Training
  • Gym

I use my Ariels mostly for running outdoors (half marathon training) and for indoor weightlifting at the gym. I have terribly low arches. The Ariels allow me to be comfortable during my work out and not have any residual, referred back/leg pain afterwards. I wish the shoe could be made a little lighter. And, I wish it came in fancier colors...hey, I'm a girl, what can I say?

Love the shoe, I am a challenging fit, and this was the one that finally worked for me. Great for gym and road. Love the shoe, my only criticism (which is why I took off one star) is that it needs some fun color choices, ended up with the aqua, would have loved some funkier color combinations!

    Not the same Ariel...

    About Me Casual/ Recreational

    Pros

      Cons

      • Poor Cushioning
      • Poor Stability
      • Wears Quickly

      Best Uses

I have worn the Brooks Ariel shoe exclusively since I broke my heel in 2003. The 2011 model was the first Ariel to cause pain in my heel and the exterior of my feet. The newer model also had holes in it within 6 months, whereas several pairs of the older model still do not have any holes and offer more support than the new model after years of wear. (I keep my old pairs to wear in the garden.) Please bring back the Ariel shoe we all loved so dearly!

I was glad to see it wasn't just myself feeling let down by newer Ariel, I don't like to 2012 or the 2013. I loved the 2010 & 2011. Was running 30 to 40 miles a week in the older models, there is no way in the new model, does not have the same level of support or over pronation control, they seem to break down super fast. I'm not a big person, weigh 115lbs, I'm very disappointed in Brooks, have been look at other makers but is not easy to find supportive running shoe like old Ariel.

Not the same great Ariel I once loved.

I've worn the Ariel for 8 years. They were comfortable for my plantar fasciitis and over pronation. I've worn them with and without inserts. I have used them on a treadmill and on the road for walking, power walking, and training for a 5k. This Ariel 12 is NOT the same. It feels so stiff that it has changed my foot strike from mid-foot to forefoot. The toe box is so narrow that my toes go numb after 10 minutes of running on the treadmill. Also, the outer sides on both feet hurt after a few minutes which makes me think that it is over-correcting.

On the positive side, I have *no* problems with the heel being too tall/big or pulling my socks down as other reviewers have commented (I have a narrow heel).

I would try 1/2 size up and wider except that it won't solve the stiffness and foot strike problem. Now I'm searching for a non-Brooks brand.

Please bring back the old Ariel!!!!!!

This is the most comfortable running shoe that I have found for flat feet. The only con is lack of color choices. I would love to have this shoe in Red/gray. Also, I wish the Ariel was also available in a trail shoe and a cross training shoe. I run about 7 miles per day, but I also do p90x and other work outs. It is not very good for lateral movement.
