DNA Midsole

What is it?

Brooks DNA is an innovative and uniquely adaptive cushioning system. By adapting to your specific weight, pace, gait and running surface, DNA offers customized cushioning and adds a spring to your step.

Traditional cushioning takes a one-size-fits-all approach, but we know that each runner is different. Brooks DNA was developed to continuously tailor the level of cushioning to your specific needs – even as they change during the run.

How does it work?

Brooks DNA is made up of a highly viscous non-Newtonian material or more simply put, a material that adapts to the specific force you apply to it. Part of the brilliance is that this compound was engineered to perform at the molecular level (picture millions of resilient 'nanosprings').

If you looked at Brooks DNA through a microscope, you'd see that it's made up of individual molecules connected in strands. These strands (which form chains) react to the amount of force placed on the foot, dispersing pressure and providing resiliency. Bottom line of this physics lesson: You get tailored cushioning that reacts to your specific weight, pace, gait, movement and running environment – "made-for-me" cushioning vs. "one size fits all."

And, as with all good technology, we’ve taken it a step further (two steps actually):

  • BioMoGo DNA is DNA technology blended with the BioMoGo midsole to provide adaptive cushioning throughout the midsole vs. just in the heel and forefoot.
  • BioMoGo DNA midsole includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes (otherwise known as active, enclosed landfills).
  • 30% more cushioning than standard midsole materials (gel or EVA)
  • Twice as much energy return for more pep in your step
  • Great performance no matter your weight or running pace
  • Smoother transition from heel to toe

Segmented Crash Pad

What is it?

The Segmented Crash Pad customizes your foot's lay-down to provide amazing cushion and smooth heel-to-toe transition throughout the run.

How does it work?

We know that a key component of maximizing your run is to provide the smoothest possible heel-to-toe transition. The Segmented Crash Pad is one technology we use to achieve this goal.

Shaped like a caterpillar, the Segmented Crash Pad is a midsole made up of independent, yet fully integrated shock absorbers. As your foot strikes the ground, the segments work together to customize your individual lay down to provide the right amount of cushion and seamless heel-to-toe transition for you – making the most of all that effort you put into each stride.

I have 6.5 2E sized foot and it is incredibly hard to find tennis shoes that fit me well. On top of it I have pronation issues. I was constantly buying cheap shoes from local stores and having foot and back pain due to the wrong shoes. I was fitted by professionals to this line of Brooks and I love them. Have owned several. I have tried a line of New Balance that fit well but they wear out much quicker than Brooks. I just wish there were more options in colors. It is sometimes hard to find the size I need.

Over the last several years I have had a number of Addictions which I would rate 5-stars. I now wear medical orthotics due to flat feet and associated over pronation. The Addiction 9s and 10s were the most comfortable athletic shoes I have ever worn - no exceptions. I use them for exercise walking because I am not to wear "walking" shoes due to lack of support compared to running shoes. I walk 3-4 miles on the road daily. This new design, however, is not comfortable at all. Whatever Brooks did to these shoes made them rigid in a bad way- like concrete blocks on your feet. Yeah, they are supportive, stable and control motion, but are no longer cushioned or comfortable. The sizing as been made slightly smaller, which is bad since Brooks already run small by at least 1/2 to a whole size, depending on the style. SInce I have already upsized twice for both the brand and the orthotic I cannot upsize again - the heels are already too big. I have even tried the men's size equivalent but the heels are even bigger so I altered the lacing and wear thinner socks in mine. I think they also altered the longitudinal toe-to-heel support. Additionally, the forefoot cushioning is nonexistent (almost as bad as the Just Do It brand) and the heel cushioning is barely better than my old worn out Addiction 10s. The materials in these and their construction seem to have been cheapened, or layers for cushioning removed. After recently trying on every candidate shoe by every major brand, the Addiction 11s are still the best of the so-called stability or motion control shoes by any manufacturer. That isn't a compliment. My feet hurt in these but I have to keep them since there is no other show suitable. Change for the sake of change and extreme cost cutting, Brooks, is not an improvement, nor responsive to loyal customers.

    Comments about Addiction 11:

This is my first pair of Brook shoes and I love them! I have a wide foot and was skeptical about the fit ordering online. However, they fit great. I also am impressed in the quality of the product.

    Comments about Addiction 11:

Have been a loyal and happy Addiction wearer for over 10 years, spanning several model numbers, starting, I believe, with Addiction 5. This shoe, plus custom orthotics, enabled me to walk comfortably, despite plantar fasciitis, some post tibial tendinitis, and low arches. They have been my only shoes that I wore all day, every day. But the Addiction 11's were just not the same shoe, in construction, fit, nor quality and I returned them. As other reviewers have mentioned, the forefoot was more "pointy" and too narrow. (I have always worn 2A narrow width and cannot go to a medium as it would be too loose at the heel.) It seems as if the basic last has been changed with this model and the shoe just did not have the same comfortable, supportive feel as I had come to expect. Also the overall quality of construction and materials has gone down, although the price hasn't! Brooks, as others have asked, please, please bring back the "old" Addictions!!

      Comments about Addiction 11:

I have had two pair of Ariels, and most recently, the Addiction 10s. They were awesome with my Sole brand orthotics inside; super-comfortable and supportive for my Achilles tendon/heel issues. When they wore out I automatically ordered the Addiction 11 version thinking they would have the same great fit and support, but something is different with this version. They don't seem to have the same fit, padding, or support as the previous version.

I walk 3+ miles a day. Addictions were recommended to me by a running store for arch/ankle support in 2000 after an injury. I've purchased all versions since then. Every time I put on a new pair I thought "these are the best shoes I've ever worn." When I put on Addiction 11, they didn't have the support I'd felt with new ones in the past. They felt the same as my Addiction 10's that I've been wearing for a year,
