After wearing out a couple pairs of Asics Gel Evolutions and frankly not being completely happy with my last pair, I returned to Asics to find that their lineup had changed and that there was really no motion control shoe to replace the Evolution. I had heard great things about the Brooks Beast for heavier runners (I weight about 187), so I started to research the Brooks lineup.

I used Brooks' excellent shoe selector tool to pick a new shoe based on my previous shoe and the recommendation was the Addiction. I went with the sizing recommendation that the tool provided, and was very happy to find last year's Addiction 10 for a great price on brooksrunning.com. I was surprised to find that the price on the manufacturer's own website was even better than some of the discount online retailers I'd used in the past.

Upon receiving the shoes, I found that the sizing was spot-on and the fit and support was much better than my previous shoes. After about 50 miles on these shoes, I just love them. The footbed is less thin in the forefoot than my Asics Gel Evolutions, and is much more comfortable on long runs. I should say that while thicker, the footbed is still very firm and not "squishy" like Nike and other shoes with the soft rubber, one-piece soles more focused on "fashion" than ergonomics. The support around the heel and ankle is excellent - Similar to my first pair of Asics Gel Evolution 3's and better than my Asics Gel Evolution 6's (the main reason I really didn't like them). The motion control in these shoes is fantastic and should mostly eliminate any tendency to roll your ankles if you have that problem (I do). Even when running on roads that are pitched outward, I always feel that the shoe is keeping things aligned. After each run, my spine, lower back, knees and hips feel great with no aches or soreness, which tells me that the alignment is good and shock absorption is effective in these shoes.

When I do wear this pair out (and it looks like they will last quite a while), I plan to get another pair of Addictions. These are my new go-to shoe.

I bought this shoe because I really needed something and the brad I wanted wasn't available locally. I decided to go with the addiction because I have a low to flat arch and trying it on in the store this was definitely the most comfortable of the availble selection.

After wearing them for a month now I have decided that they're not bad, but I liked another brand better. For my personal running style there is too much cushioning in the heal and the shoe feels overly tall. I'm also noting additional strain on the front and sides of my shin which requires additional stretching to relieve discomfort. I will not buy another pair of these shoes.

Additional information: I run approximately an 8 min mile and typical runs last from 2-6 miles 4 or 5 times a week.

Great shoe for overpronators

By Paul the distance runner

from Batesville, AR

About Me Avid Athlete

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Durable
  • Good Arch Support
  • Pronation Control

Cons

    Best Uses

    • Distance running

I love long distance running and because of overpronation and little arch, I need the solid support I get from the Brooks Addiction 10. After I started using this shoe, I had less problems with plantar fasciitis and shin splints. It is my favorite shoe.

          Best Uses

This shoe is marketed as a pronation control shoe and it does that very well, but at the expense of comfort and cushioning. I've done three runs of five miles each and have found the shoe to be very rigid and uncomfortable, with little to no give in the footbed. I've run in Asics all my life, most recently the 2000 series, and when I contacted customer service about the Brooks shoes they said their model most similar to those is the Adrenaline, not the Addiction, but I've been unable to find a pair in a store to try on and confirm.
