Inspiring Coaches Finalist Danny Weed

Flagler Palm Coast High School - Palm Coast, FL

Number of years coaching: 5 years coaching track and cross country.

At a glance: As one nomination stated, Coach Danny Weed not only teaches students to be great athletes, he teaches them how to be great people. His positive attitude, high ideals and strong work ethic are passed along to his team. If a student athlete needs a pair of shoes-even if they are off his own feet, a ride to practice or a helping hand, Coach Weed is always willing to help out. He not only inspires his high school runners, but others in the local running community where he is actively involved and coaches others to reach their running goals.

What is Coach Weed’s favorite coaching moment?
My favorite coaching moment was the Lake City 3A Regional Cross Country meet in 2011. Our boys were ranked 11th going in to regionals, but only the top 6 teams would advance to the state meet the following week. As the race came to its conclusion, they crossed the finish line all running a personal record that day, finishing 6th, and qualifying them for States.

What makes Coach Weed Run Happy?
What makes me Run Happy is working with new and younger runners. I love to see their progression and also their love for running like I had back in high school. What also makes happy is seeing ‘veteran’ runners share my coaching advice with the younger team members; I like to think of that as paying it forward.
