youll need a shoe string to tie it together 12/18/2007 | Yolanda Flamino
--I recently learned the word plat (in the past tense, platted) while on a run the other evening. It was at the bottom of a sign for a cemetery…improving one’s vocabulary while running on a dark, cold night—boy, do I know how to live it up!
--I went home during Thanksgiving. We were burning some brush piles and I learned exactly why Brooks calls a particular model of their gloves, Vapor Dry. Have one accidentally attach itself to a log you are throwing in a fire and before you can even think to fish it out—it’s gone. Vaporized.
--Another clothing comment: the Brooks Thermal Visibility pants are great for both running and lounging. This past weekend I learned they are also an excellent choice for shoveling. Trifecta! for the winter months.
--I’ve been really into late ‘60’s, early ‘70’s music lately. You should check out a clip of Janis Joplin live in Toronto (part of the Festival Express Tour) in 1970 singing Cry Baby. Take note of the very beginning. Woman Can Wail. While doing that, you may want to also check out some clips with Dick Cavett. He has some good interviews with Janis and Jimi Hendrix (among others).
--Some of my recent musical acquisitions are: Janis Joplin, Etta James, Pavarotti, and The Receiving Ends of Sirens.
--One of the women’s favorite team games is “what’s your favorite?” This can pass many a long run, plane ride, or idle moment. It’s simple. Just ask what’s your favorite ________ (fill in the blank). Then, naturally, ask the person for his/her second favorite. If things get really crazy, you can ask them to rank their top three, as this always stirs up debate. The most recent is: What’s your favorite nut? Followed by, rank your top three favorite nuts. You’re probably thinking about it. It’s that good of a game. As a side note, I got a lot of flak for putting peanuts in my top three…they are NOT the bologna of nuts!
--Another popular game to pass the time is: “you’re on an airplane”. In this game, it is always the same scenario, just the characters change. You’re on a five hour plane ride, in the middle seat. On the left of you is __________ and on the right is ________. Who do you pick to snuggle up next to? The blanks have ranged from David Beckham & Shakira, Madonna & Brittany, Ben Affleck & Matt Damon, and all the way to Cap’n Crunch and the Honey Smacks Dig ‘Em Frog. There are endless possibilities. Obviously, endless fun.
--And, I’ve been asked to announce a (potentially) forthcoming MoGo commercial from the EqualKicks Productions Company (based out of Tienken). The title, which may be changed, is: MO Independence.
Rando 11/18/2007 | Yolanda Flamino
I have a bunch of half-ideas for my blog, but nothing solid is materializing at the moment. So, here are a few random thoughts (that have nothing to do with my half-thoughts)…
-I recently saw Shrek the Third…I recommend it
-I not as recently saw Across the Universe…I strongly recommend it
-I highly despise Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving
-it now gets dark early and stays dark late, be good to your friends and nightlife them. They’ll thank you for it later.
-today on the way to the group run we say a dellama…half deer/half llama…I kid you not. It was not fleet of foot like a typical
Rochester deer, but perhaps he knew he is unique and was just strutting his stuff. I have witnesses.
-today during the group run I saw a sea otter. I don’t have witnesses. It happened.
-Here are a few quotes from some books I recently read (followed by some poor referencing)…because everyone likes a little mind candy…
“ While looking for the light, you may suddenly be devoured by the darkness and find the true light.” (The Scripture of the Golden Eternity, Kerouac)
“I do not know in order to believe, I believe in order to know.” (Augustine)
“Our dreams prove that to imagine…is among mankind’s deepest needs.” (The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Kundera)
…and in keeping with a loose theme: “Perhaps people ought to feel with more imagination.” (Seven Types of Ambiguity, Perlman)
-Good luck to anyone doing Thanksgiving Races!!
Good Luck Guys 10/16/2007 | Yolanda Flamino
I would like to dedicate my precious blog space to the men’s team and wish them luck at the Olympic Marathon Trials. Although the race is still a few weeks away, this coincides with my blog spot. The men marathoners have been working very hard this segment and it’s nothing short of impressive to hear about their long runs, workouts, focus, and excitement for November 3. I can’t wait to watch them race and cheer them on through the roads of Central Park. Good Luck Guys!!
