What every runner needs: a lightweight, water-resistant jacket with front-to-back retroreflectivity. Another nice touch? The zippers on the pockets have easily grabbable pulls -- even if you've got gloves on, you'll be able to open and close them. A great layering piece for spring and fall.
John "The Penguin" Bingham loves this jacket: "There are plenty of good ones out there, but for me the number one pick has to be the new Brooks Essential Run Jacket in the dayglo yellow. No, it’s not subtle, and that’s the point. If you’re going to be out there running on the roads you want to be seen.... This jacket can be seen."

I bought this because I needed something hi-vis and lighter than the full-on mountain parka stuff I wear when it's raining hard.Anyways, overall this is a very nice jacket but two things really detract from the "5" I wanted to give it:1) For some reason the outdoors/athletic/etc market has decided that even large people (6'1", 255, football player build) do not need exercise or outdoor gear, and ergo the few products they even make in XXL (and fogettabout XXXL) are NOT REALLY TRUE XXL. This thing is NOT NOT NOT a true XXL. Oh, it appears large enough, but apparently Brooks' designers (just like all the other pinheads in clothing design) believe that even a true XXL guy should have thin waifish arms and scrawny shoulders and a narrow waist. The result is an XXL jacket that does NOT NOT NOT fit like an XXL. It is rather clearly an XL-T with just smidgeon more in some of the seams. When I put it on over even a t-shirt it is tight, the shoulders bind, etc2) The music (mp3) player pocket is a very nice touch but is JUST SMALL enough that it won't fit anything approaching a classic or full-sized iPod or similar. Huh??? They put an mp3 pocket in there, [...] then make it just small enough that it won't fit the single most popular mp3 player in the world!?!?!?!Other than those two beefs, I love this jacket fiver stars, but just cannot.

Comments about Essential Run Jacket:
I caught this jacket on sale online. I really like it. Other than the drawstring cord snapping after 1 week of use, it has done a good job. Seems slightly too big for me. I would recommend it!

Comments about Essential Run Jacket:
The jacket is quite nice. However, as a runner it seems to have some flaws. For me, the jacket sleeves seem to be a bit restricting. FOr instance, when running a speed workout and working on form when my arms move up the entire jacket goes up...or in my case it actually ended up ripping just beneath the armpit area. It works well with distance running (I am a distance runner and have had no problems on long runs, etc.) but for sprinting/speed it seems restrictive. Overall, good product, but can still be improved.

Comments about Essential Run Jacket:
Great jacket, nearly 100% water and wind proof. Ive done a run in a very high wind situation and it was perfect. And this morning it was raining, again perfectly dry. The jacket is a little bit longer than I would prefer and a bit baggy in the stomach. And this is judging by a large; which fit great in the arms.

Comments about Essential Run Jacket:
I use this on runs when it's <40F. Works great. The fit allows layering. Also one of the few jackets that fit my long arms comfortably. Very windproof.

Comments about Essential Run Jacket:
This jacket fits true to size everywhere except the shoulders/armpits on me. I bought this to replace my old Brooks Wangani (sp?) that I loved. My previous jacket was a medium so I bought a medium Essential as well. However, at 5'8"/165 lbs. it's too tight in the shoulders, so much so that I tore the armpit bending down to tie my running shoes. The large was far too big, so I stuck with this size. The fit doesn't restrict movement while running though, so I'll keep it for a season. Overall, not a bad running jacket for the price.

Comments about Essential Run Jacket:
I do like this jacket very much, although I wish I could have tried it on somewhere prior to purchase. I feels true to size everywhere except in the shoulders which are a bit snug. It's not a huge issue unless you cross your arms, then you can feel it pull tight across the back of your shoulders.

Comments about Essential Run Jacket:
When I need a jacket for some rainy weather the Essential Run Jacket is my choice. It is probably one of the best running jackets for repelling water without sacrificing on any additional weight. Several colors to choose from make this a stylish choice as well!

Comments about Essential Run Jacket:
I got this jacket for something to wear in springtime weather or on windy days around town and while hiking. It's a great looking jacket and fits pretty well. It definitely runs large as I had to exchange my original purchase for a size down. Comfortable and lightweight. I don't like to run in jackets, so I can't comment on how breathable it is for runs.

Comments about Essential Run Jacket:
You can't wear a better jacket to run in cold, wet weather. When I first got this jacket, I thought that it would be too light to run in the cold. Boy was I wrong! I have worn this jacket in the teens, with winds blowing at 30-35 mph and rain coming down sideways! It has stood up to the task of keeping me warm and dry. I'd fight someone if they tried to take my jacket away!
